Losing All Power For A Split Second When Pulling Off..

Recommended Posts

Guest Stainpain

Someone might know if this is a common problem...

When I pull off normally in my 1.6GTI it seems to lose ALL power for a split second, and then gain it all back again.

This causes the car to 'jerk' a lot of the times and its quite dangerous when pulling out at some junctions..

Someone told me it could be the airflow meter and some say sparkplugs or leads..

The problem never happens whilst I'm driving normally, only pulling off :/

Any suggestions guys??

Thanks :D

Mine did this for the first time the other day or at least sounds like the same, i pulled out onto a roundabout casually but its almost as if it had no fuel going it i had to quickly dip the clutch again give the throttle another stab and pull off..

Only done it that one time though as far as i remember, i put it down to letting the clutch out too quick

Sounds like symptoms of a knackered air flow meter to me, I've had exactly the same fault in the past. When it loses all power does it sit there and idle but will not respond to throttle? You may find as it gets worse it starts to do it when driving along as well.

I had huge amounts of problems with this sort of thing last year (I've got a few threads on it, if you want to look back). At first I changed AFM, no change, did spark plugs and leads which helped a little but still not 100%. Changed dizzy cap, arm, ignition amp, coil pack, everything electrical I could think of, new battery and re did all of the earthing straps/points and still no change. Then changed head gask. as that was leaking slightly, no chsnge. I then assumed it was fueling or air so fitted a set of 40's, still the same problem. In the end it turned out to be a bad earth on the coil pack. Not had any problems since!

Right, when it loses all power it happens that quick so i dont know if it idles...BUT if i catch it quick enough by dipping my clutch, the car actually cuts out.

It's like MiniGibbo says, as if there is no fuel going through.. From today it has also started reving a bit higher :/

Is there any other symptoms of the airflow meter being knackerd?

I'll check some of them suggestions Obey, and now that you mentioned a bad earth. My top engine mount needs changing so when i pull off the engine wiill rock, maybe breaking the earth connection....I'll look into it.

Cheers everyone
