Xsara Vts Rack Steering Column

yep, as long as the lower joint isn't binding on the upper column casing at its base, and the indicators still cancel! there is a certain degree of movement on the bushes as its just a plain shaft.

Sorry to drag this up yet again, but I'm not seeing a solution and my car is on axle stands!

I have 86 non pas square drive, and a VTS rack. With all of the uj slack taken up towards the driver, column moved as far towards driver as possible, and the rack loosened off for maximum space, the uj is still to far forward (long) to fit onto the rack. the bolt hole is about 5-8mm too far for the divet in the rack shaft.

Any ideas? ideally dont want to start cutting stuff

Cheers,

Matt

bringing an old thread about this common upgrade

It appears that the UJ and lower steering column from Citroen C15 (non PAS) is square, and fits the xsara rack.

I'm not able to edit the previous post, but the correct part number for lower steering column with square UJ is 4103A8

Sasic number is 1034A84 which is also decent quality.

I am doing the same modification (xsara rack and saxo pump) so I tried and order this exact column that was available on autodoc. It's the same a the one that was on my 1985 non pas 205 GTI.

The three colum are aligned at the pivot, from top to bottom, the xsara one (longer on the driver side and shorter on the rack side, and too big for the boot), then, my stock 205 non pas square one (too long to fit the xsara rack), and the sasic one, it's the same as my non pas one. I think that there was no square pas column on 205 (I have one pas rack, and check a lot of ad picture with no luck).

So I tried the "Tom Fenton method" (I was a bit tricky, and I am not sure that I did it the right way) :

And voila, my stock one, and below, the mix of the sasic and the xsara :

The bearing suffered a bit, but, it's still smooth. I didnt do the welding spot yet, it looks pretty stuck in there.

Thanks Tom, I would never I have think or try it if you hadn't documented it.

You need to do something to ensure the bearings are retained. There is quite a bit of load on them when steering the car. If one comes out you could suddenly lose steering which will likely not end well. If I did it again I would probably make some washers to hold the bearings in and then tack the washers to the coupling.

Hello,

I am still on the project, I need now to fit the connecting rods, that I got from a 205 rack. On the rack, there is some self locking washer :

On the 205 rack there is a flat, and the washer seats on this flat. It seems like a locking device. On the xsara rack, the flat is not there, so the washer seats weird, and doesnt do the locking feature :

Do I need to put something, or I leave it like on the first picture ?

Thank you for your advices,

Pierre

Can you make the locking washer work? If not, I'd probably apply some 262 Loctite and call it quits.

Hello,

Thank for your answer.

I don't think I can, there is no flat like on the 2 205 rack that I have PAS or non PAS :

I dont remember for sure, but I think the xsara rack had any locking system when I took it apart.

I'll go with some thread locker to be sure.

Hello,

Some news of my mini project. I work on my car one hour at a time every other week so progress is slow but I can't believe my last post was in june.

I drove it for the first time yesterday to go to the french MOT. It was nice, the pump work only for a few miles, but while it works, it was nice !

I choose to fit a 205 PAS cooler and a pump with a detach tank that I fixed on the right side of the intake manifold. The pump is installed as on the saxo/106, on the left, in front of the gearbox, as I dont have room behind the battery as I have seen it in other setup.

So, some of the problem that I encounter :

- The ports on the rack are on the opposite side of a standard 205 rack

- The hard line on the rack were touching the shell and needed to be bended

- The heat protection over the rack was touching the exhaust manifold and need triming

- The PAS cooler was too long on one side so it needed shortening (I was using the exit of the rack from the 205 rack, that exit this other way around)

- The pump return was bigger than the exit of the radiator, so I could use a proper line, it was too rigid, I used a diesel line :

- Like said above, the connector rod "locking washer" of the 205 does not fit the xsara rack

- I striped the thread of one the antiroll bar "fixation". I need to lower the subframe to fix that, and it's not going to happen soon...

Some pictures (the MOT guys were kind enough to let me take some while on their lift) :

The high pressure line made with the xsara and saxo part :

The pas in place :

The 205 PAS cooler with the new clips supporting it with the brake line :

The pump :

The return line that I used, dont know if it will support the pas fluid :

There is still some work (to make it work again to begin) but it's nice. Thank you all for the idea and all the info that I was able to find on the forum. I'll be glad to share more info and picture if needed.

Pierre
