Sl 434 Tyre Size

Recommended Posts

cRaig

Morning guys,

Quick question- what is the best size of tyre for my set of Sl434s? Im sure I did ask this in the last couple of years, but I cannot find or remember the result now!

They are going on a standard suspension height, if that makes any difference- Im slightly worried anything too low in profile compared to the original wheels will look a little weedy in the arches.

Would a 185/55/15 Michelin PE2 be alright? Or better to go up to a 195/50/15?

(also very excited about getting tyres fitted- they have been spare bedroom ornaments for too long now! :D )

EDIT: Looks like I was previously veering towards 195/50 according to an old email I sent to get prices, as I think my last tyres on the standard 1.9 alloys were 185/50 and they looked ok.

Thanks

Craig

I have 185 55 15's on my 1.9 speedlines, Meirion said that was the standard 205 size tyre :)

they look very smart (not too big or too small)

I guess the width is the main question then- 185s seem alot more expensive than 195s (72 quid compared to 111) But I think that the 195s would be better for the sl434s, as they are quite alot wider than the standard 1.9 alloys..

Thanks, didnt see that before I replied. I shall price up some 195/55s then. :) May have to go with 195/50, as that seems more common, but will see what I can do

no! 195 55 is too tall for a 205.

unless that was a typo and you meant 185.

195/55 will fit on a 205, I have had cars through my hands with them on before, I also use them on my track car as you can get Dunlop Direzza in 195/55/15.

I use 195/50 on all my road 205's. Yes the OE size was 185/55 but unless you are out for a concours cup it makes not a toss of difference in the real world, apart from the ~£150 a set of 4 tyres that stays in your pocket when you buy 195/50's instead.

Indeed. 195/50s are much cheaper! I guess Im trying to balance the aesthetic look as well, between filling the arches enough, at the standard high suspension height, and not having too much tyre profile in comparison to a quite open, narrow spoked alloy. Not too concerned about originality of tyre size per se, or I wouldnt be fitting sl434s! :D

Too much choice!

Yeah, the price difference could well be the deciding factor:

Both PE2s

195/50 £54

185/55 £99.3!

I think SL 434 best suit with 195/50. So I have with mine.

What's the grip level like? My mate had proxie 4's and they were a bit unpredictable

Pretty good. Don't overheat like Eagle F1's, but not quite as grippy. They last longer though

Poxy is all I can say about the Proxie 4's,I think the new Hancook's are rated very highly in the same price range

But on the topic of SL's, 195/50's suit the rim width more than 185's would do

Which Hankook's are they Miles? I was seriously impressed with the S1 Evo's

Im with Miles, not a fan of Proxie 4's at all. Particularly as mine were wearing in, the wet performance was becoming more and more unpredictable. Im not naive enough to blame them for the accident, but they certainly conspired against me!

Still, 195/50 Michelin PE2's fitted yesterday, looking forward to getting them on the car :)

I've forgotten which ones they where now, I'll ask again when I'm down at my tyre place

I've always run 195 of either 45 or 50 variety on 434's, 45's look better but ride quality suffers. Given the wheel width i wouldn't go less than 195.
