R888S Rubbing On The Rear

Recommended Posts

TaffyTim

Ive just pulled my r88s out of the shed ready for saturdays first trackday in years, on its first test the rear wheels were rubbing on the arm on the knuckle where it meets the beam (sorry if these arent the proper terms).

The offside are only just rubbing but the nearside are rubbing enough to make a noise inside the cabin.

Ive put the roadwheels back on and they have just about enough clewaerence not to rub so it looks as if I'll have to wear these on saturday.

I thought that my rear beam was fine, do i take it that this is a sign that its on its way out?

My tyres were stored on a set of wheels stacked one on top of each other like a stack of coins, intially inflateed to 30 psi, although they were about 10 psi when they came out of the shed today.

Could it be just the tyres are iffy?

im a bit annoyed by this as im going to have different fronts to back on track this weekend :(:(

worn beam bearings wont cause this, but a bent stub axle could, also the R888's are known to have pretty fat sidewalls and are a little wide for a 6" rim in 195, so a small spacer may be required.

As said the sidewalls are larger so a spacer maybe required, around 5mm will do as the sidewalls move allot when going around the bendy bits

Could be that the ARB endplate (which is normally what they rub on) isn't sat fully home, which would explain why it's rubbing on one side and not the other.

Normally a clattered beam that's cambering up causes the tyre to rub on the inner arch once it gets bad enough.

I dont suppose you have any in stock do you Miles? Are you still going to castle Combe on Saturday?

that was my initial thought and the response i was hoping someone would say :D So glad my years of reading posts on here hasnt been waisted and so glad im not needing a beam rebuild.

If Miles hant got any in where is the best place to get some spacers from?

>>>edit... It looks like Merlin might have some, so i can put a call into them tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed

halfords used to have 3mm, 5mm and 10mm spacers in stock but not sure if they still keep them. might be worth a try.

If you're still running standard wheel bolts, remember that you're very limited in what spacers you can safely run.
