I was under the impression that the wheel can protrude a certain distance, but the tread of the tyre must be covered by the arch / wing... so stretched tyres are ok as long as the tread is covered by the car and the wheel can stick out. I have seen an extract from the law somewhere on a DUB forum but cant find it at the moment. good luck with your rear beam and wheel bearings :-/

I understand there will be more stress on wheel bearings etc, but would it realy be more so than a track car on sticky tyres?

Those wheels are exactly the sort of thing I want to run on the 309 so I can run cheap wide slicks! What offset are they?

they do a couple of different offsets, and different widths too, 6j, 8j and 10j in 13"

just a bit of an update on this. I spoke to a pair of local coppers about this yesterday (not that I got pulled over, I just had a chat with them when I nipped into tescos) their general opinion was that they didnt know enough about the regulations involved to warrant them doing anything about it, they said if a traffic orientated officer saw it he would likely pull me over and check over the car but he would have difficulty in bringing a case to court.

Regardless the arches are just being painted before going on so its not being driven around at the moment. Also the MOT is the beginning of next month so if it passes with the arches on then its all gravy :)

excuse the bad pictures and electical tape holding them on temporarily . I think this may be the set I go for . I'll just need to cut them in half so the door opens properly

I also like the red plastic seam trim I bought on a whim aswell, might try and line that up with the cars rubber strips down the side

looking forward to seeing how this looks when you have finished... I also have a 5 door, lowered with a rubbing problem. <_< and have been wondering how wide arches would look.

so.... in a moment of coffee fuelled enthusiasm, I have started to chop the arches. taken some off both sides and tried the wheels on to check the clearance. Still plenty more metal to come off yet, as there's a lower beam on the car than last time I had the wheels on. The only issue to address really, is one I thought I might get away with avoiding, but no such luck; I think the very tip of the door may need a couple of mm's ground off, as that is the only part of the arch curve where its hard to remove material. As it stands now that tip of the door is where the wheel is likely to catch.

stage one testing is using fibre glass group 4 mini arches bastardised beyond recognition. they may be temporary and are for form over function currently. they have quite a nice curve to them, but dont fit the body well without cutting the tips off, which I have now done and they loose most of their good looks. Bit of a shame but theyre cheap enough to experiment with.

as with all fibre glass, there's been plenty of 'manufacturing tolerances' to make it tricky getting both side the same, but both sides will be taken off for more chopping in the morning anyway.

heres a, by no means final, sneak peek

and the arches are perfectly fulfilling the 'no tread shall be seen from above' rule

as per usul nothing I do is straight forward. with it being a 5 door, retaining the use of the rear doors throws a spanner in the works when fitting arches. so the arche are both cut into two pieces to facilitate the rear doors. this makes lining everything up a nightmare, so that'll be an ongoing job untill it looks right, but for now will just be attached securely.

If you're worried about arch-tyre contact, use zip-ties instead of rivets. I know someone who did this on a ratted Mk1 MX-5 and with the block of the zip tie hidden out of view, it suited the rat-look perfectly and meant there was a bit of flexibility to prevent any damage if the tyres rubbed. Much like you probably will reading this, I laughed when I first heard that's how he'd done it.

I thought I'd give everybody a chance to shout a big I TOLD YOU SO! at me:

post-9599-0-32744400-1348269971_thumb.jpg

on the way up to warrington on monday, was following Daz (tesstuf) in his 309 work horse, when a very shiny Seat Exio (?) squeezed in front of me on the A50 with what I thought were quite strange side repeaters on the rear bumper. I then see a motorized board pop up from behind the seats and a 'Follow Me' message pops up, and the blue lights start to flash.

I followed the police car into an industrial estate, where there was a Vosa van and a customs +excise van.

It would appear they were doing routine stops on commercial vehicles to check for dodgy fuel or overly rusty transits.

So he comes over to my window (friendly guy) and asks if I know why he's pulled me, whilst looking at the front wheel (which have arches ready to go on, I just havent got it done yet).

post-9599-0-98737100-1348269987_thumb.jpg

I say the wheels obviously, and mention to him that I was struggling to clarify how much poke is legal and how much isnt. He confirmed that 'some' is allowed, but he'd have to read up on it to find the official figures.

He wandered about the car a few times, jotting down on his book of tickets, whilst discussing something with the vosa guy who was checking a van over. He doesnt seem to have a definitive answer either. after what seemed like an age (think we worked out it was about 30-35mins) he came to explain whats what.

the wheels, shouldnt be like that (this we already know) but he's unable to offer a vague measurement of what is OK. He also mentiones that the MOT would be at the testers discretion, but then construction and use regs come into it.

There wasnt any point in arguing, as he'd already overlooked my non-road legal pressed french plates (which he couldve fined me £60 he said)

he said he couldve fined me for the wheels, but instead issued me a producer, to take a form to an mot garage after changing the wheels for them to stamp and then send back.

thankfully we were on the way to Mark's (marksorrento205)

and between the two legends we managed to cobble together a set of wheel bolts and a pair of speedlines (r888 clad no less) for me to blast it over to the local place to get the form stamped, before leaving the car at Marks that evening for him to do a bit of fettling for me.

so big thanks to daz and mark, for helping me out!

but it seems the question is still there, how much is too much?

From what I remember reading all tread has to be covered by the arch but the sidewall, wheel etc can extend by upto 20mm from the bodywork. That's why people tend to run stretched tyres.

This is my old Polo which was probably pretty close to borderline I think.

What offset and width is that john?

Wondering if what ive found will go under a gti arch or not, i certainly wont be stretching though, value grip, and the rims, more!

the fronts are 13x8. the offset I will have to doublecheck, but note in that picture I'm using 15mm spacers also to clear the calipers. and they are a bit overkill, would easily get away with 10mm just haven't got round to buying a new set yet. that's a 205 Tyre on the 8j and to be honest I was expecting a bigger stretch but its not bad at all in my opinion. although as its 205/60/13 they catch slightly on the valance at full lock. I would ideally go down to 195 but I can only seem to find van or trailer tyres in that size, so I might try a chunky 185 and hope its not too stretched

After checking I think the offset is neg10 and as I mentioned before 8j x 13
