Cj Engine Swap

Recommended Posts

jimmynewcj

Hi i have bought a Cj 1400cc as a bit of a project just wondering what engine options there are available to fit,

Ive been reading a few threads on here and see to get the XU engine in its full suspension/subframe etc. and also they are quite a bit heavier? also been thinking of a GTI 6 conversion but would this be a bit too much work?

Would a 106 GTI engine or similar be more suitable?

Also are a lot of parts interchangeable between a CJ and say a 1.9 GTI, im presuming the GTI has completly different brake/suspension set up but are they interchangeable with some work?

Apologies for slightly vague questions but i would appreciate any info or areas to direct me to read!!

thanks

James

106 gti/saxo vts engine would be better in my eyes as its in keeping with the tu series engines. theres a few people here that have done it.

try this thread by miami chris:

another one is jackmans thread if you have a search on here you should find it :)

the brakes are interchangeable with a mix of base model hubs 1.9 discs and i think gti calipers aswell. someone else will confim for sure what it is you need.

hope this helps

Fitting a TU 16v is just as much, if not more work than a XU swap with less power gains.....

Thanks for your replies, i would be getting a local garage to do this conversion, i like the sound of the 1.6GTI as i had a saxo VTS many moons ago and it was pretty rapid!

As im getting a garage to do this conversion i would like to provide as much of the parts/info myself so obvioulsy the more straight forward the conversion the better!

I am an electrical engineer by trade so im thinking on that side of things i am pretty competant, but unfortunately due to lack of space and time the majority of the conversion will be done at the garage.

The car i have bought is mint, it only had one owner and 50K from new, its been dry stored for 11 years. I stuck a new battery on it, fresh fuel and spark plugs and it fired straight up! But i bought this as a project and i think before fettling with styling etc the engine should be the first call.

Thanks again for your replies!

James
