Irratic Tickover On 1993 205 1.4I

Recommended Posts

I've just bought a 1993 CJ which is fuel injected. The car runs really well exept for two things.

The car is difficult to start from cold , the tickover is slow and unreliable when cold, and much too high when hot. I have changed the idle control valve but this has made no difference.

Any ideas what to do next.

Sounds like an air leak - Check every hose around the inlet manifold\throttle body. My money would be on one being perished or broken and letting unmetered air in below the throttle plate, causing a weak mixture.

Thanks for the reply Rossd

I too have come to the conclusion I have an air leak .I've checked the hoses but haven't found anything.

Next step is to remove the manifold and the throttle body to see if I can spot the problem.

Manifold and throttle body are off. The only problem I can see is that someone has done this before and has replaced the manifold without using any gaskets.

I've ordered new gaskets and will put it back together tomorrow.

Fingers crossed.

I'm really gutted now. I checked the manifild for cracks and straightness, no problems there. Carefully fitted the new gaskets and refitted the throttlebody.

No improvement it's exactly as it was before, difficult to start from cold, slow irratic tickover when cold, too high tickover when hot.

Not sure where to go from here, relpace throttle body or ECU ?

my 1.1 was doing this, turned out to be the map sensor on rh strut top.

also check the tension of the throttle cable.

In desperation I took the car to a local Citroen Peugeot specialist. He put it on his diagnostic machine and it turns out that someone has fitted an AX GT engine whilst retaining the fuel injection from the CJ engine.

However the AX GT engine does not have the sensors that are needed to tell the ECU what to do. He also thinks there is an earthing porblem in the wiring loom.

It's going in tomorrow so that he can drill and tap the head or block ( I can't remember which) and fit the required sensor, and sort out the dodgy earth.
