What To Do?

Hello everyone, this is my first post.

I am currently looking to purchase a 205, i had a 1.6 gti when i was 18 and i absolutely loved it!

My friend had a mint 205 CJ 1988 for sale and my plans are to upgrade the engine maybe to a GTI6 or a 1.9 GTI with weber carbs etc.

Also i would be looking to put a T16/DImma bodykit on it as this is something i have always fancied.

Right so the question is should i do this on the CJ (which is going to cost me next to nothing to buy as he wants rid) or should i buy a CTI whereby half the spec is already on the car?

Or should i maybe look for someones ex project whereby the body work has been undertaken (ie Dimma kit) and thus not have to foot the expectant large bodyshop bill?

The reason i ask is because im very much unsure which route to take, this CJ he has is solid and immaculate. and would be a great donor shell. But i, not too sure how universal the 205 shells are with reference to interchangable parts i.e rear discs etc. i dont want to be stuck with something is restricted on upgrading but would prefer a solid shell!!

Anyway this is planning to be a long term project.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

James

A delayed response, but I was drawn in by your avatar!

If you are kitting a car, get the best shell possible. A GTI shell would not be much different and that is mostly the rear arches and the front ones and you will be changing these anyway. A GTI dash will fit in fine too so easy to upgrade. CTI seats are swappable for GTI ones too. Carpets are better on a CTI but most are usually shot and red ones seem to bleach. If putting a better engine in then you would be wise to go to a GTI subframe. There is not much difference between CJ and CTI suspension either. Both benefit from GTI anti roll bar and torsion bars

i'd go for the cj! if youre anything like me, your future plans will change as you go along, so start off with that, then you can find the bits you want to improve on and continue onwards :)

Can you do the work yourself and don't mind sourcing all the various parts needed?

Starting with a GTi/CTi shell makes things more simple as you've already got much of what you need, especially if you're planning on running the GTi-6 engine as injection, and that's a massive benefit if you're paying someone else to do the work or you're not the sort of person that wants to track down all the bits and pieces that you'll ideally want to change on a base model shell.
