Old Cars Don't Seem Old Anymore.

My 205 is the oldest car I've ever bought. Most of my cars have been about 6 years old when I bought them. In 2003 I had a 7 year old mk3 fiesta and it was treated as an old car. I then bought a late ph1 306 and that was 8 years old at the time and treated as an old car. I bought a late 89 535i sport a few years ago and was slated by my family for having such an old banger.

The 205 feels older some days than others. I guess when I want to whip to work in it, it feels old. When I want to shoot down to the coast for a drive and take the 205 it feels great.

I was looking at it earlier actually. The door frames are so tiny and modern cars have taller doors that form into the roof. I was thinking that they will never make cars like it again. I then wen on to think I should get used to modern cars as that's what we will be tinkering with in years to come. 205s will become more sparse and my 2002 Clio cup will probably become a £500 car that people will be buying for something to tinker with. I'm quite lucky with that, having no ABS and being one of the last models without it before regulations changed.

They just dont make them like they used to.

I'd like to think I'd still have my 205s ;)

Same here, it's been 11 years, why stop now? I actually think everyone should experience old car ownership to some extent, it's both knowledge and character building!!

If you remember a certain car or range of cars being new or current models, you'll always look at them that way :).

Agreed, it's all about reference points.

Same with the Euro.

There are huge numbers of people over here -myself included- doing a "how much is that in proper money?(i.e. Deutsch Marks)"-calculation when shopping.

That's wrong, of course, as more than a decade of inflation is completely taken out of the equation.

Comming back to the technical aspects of why old cars don't feel old anymore:

Cars simply improved quantum-leap-style over the decades. Especially when 60s and 70s cars are compared to later stuff.

This is why "youngtimers" (strange German term for classic cars younger than 30 years) gained so much popularity over the last couple of years.

You are able to run a car that provides a completely different driving experience without the need to get your hands dirty every weekend.

When the idea of having children entered my life and I was still on a Minis-only diet, I considered it a good idea to turn my attention towards something more senible, needing less welding to play around with.

Bright idea - the Minis are still there and, because they last much better, the Peugeot-collection includes nearly a dozen vehicles. :D

how about this.... The Mini ( Proper mini) was produced until 2000... And the following year the 307 was in showrooms!

My 205's are parked up on the drive next to my 1275 mayfair... so they always look super modern super mini's
