Bike Rack Advice

Recommended Posts

samthornton1990

Does anyone here run bike racks on their 205?

I'll be slapping a cage in so I can't but them inside.

Just wondering if anyone has a good one that they've had no problems with (i've had several fall off on me)

It'll be carrying a 20kg+ rig

Also how much does the MPG go down when it's on

should still be able to get a bike in with a cage I'd have thought ?

I can fit my bikes in behind the front seats across the car.

I have been using the ones that hang around and up the rear hatch in my previous sorrento without problems.

Obviously, you can't open the boot without removing it so I'd rather use a bike rack on roofbars now.

The ones Halfords sell for the roofbars are made by Thule and don't break the bank.

How much are we talking? I've had bad experience with roof bars.... a nut came off the bit that was supporting the bikes last time :P

I *think* it was something like 70 pounds for 2 of them but I don't see them anymore; it was a good 2+ years ago when I got it.

In fact it is exactly like http://www.halfords....tegoryId_165477 and I guess either Thule made it for Halfords or Halfords "copied" it from them :P ?

They do one for 20 pounds but I have no experience from it: http://www.halfords....tegoryId_165477

Nice bike! Although down hill is for queres!

Not that you would consider it due to the size/weight on your bike but don't use one of these;

http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?hl=en&q=single+bike+rack&ix=sea&ion=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1366&bih=667&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=15409437838001411575&sa=X&ei=WoNrT9iWO4-X0QXGrqS2Bg&ved=0CIIBEPICMAA

I used it a couple times on a couple run about 205's which I didn't care about too much and it scratched the boot, wobbled about as well. i always put it inside now. Also off topic but soft rack surf board racks scratch as well.

This works nicely on mine http://www.pendle-bike.co.uk/shopping/strap-on-rack.php You can lift the boot up with everything on. Sturdy doesn't flap about when travelling FAST.

That pendle one does look pretty good, hang the bike above the lights too, thanks man, I will have to look into that one!

Downhill for FAGS??!?!?! No way, what do you ride? I will have to question your sexuality if it's xc or roady bikes :P That rack does look pretty unsturdy

I've got a lighting board for mine as I have the bikes a bit lower.

Amazing how easy it is to block the indicators etc -

Works a treat!

As Simes says, you have to be careful with the rear lights, particularly phase 1's as they have one less bulb for the rear light

I bought this from the local bike shop, can carry 3 bikes, very sturdy and doesn't block the number plate. You can also open the boot with 3 bikes on although granted its a little heavy and you have to hold it as expected. The biggest downside is it does mark the paint where the pads sit and also where the hooks sit.

i wouldn't personally stick anything on the back of my car like that, my bikes (downhill and xc) get the seats folded down for it to go in the car, not that they would be easy to fit on a rack

Both wheels off and you should fit it in.

I can fit 2 Bmx's in, with front wheel off easily.

1 Bmx and a MTB just can fit in the boot of a 205 with a cage.

Quite sad but i put a towbar on mine (it already had the holes in the boot from previously having a towbar fitted) and use a Thule Eurobike 3 bike carrier as i didnt want to hang things off the boot. Can open the boot when its on, doesnt move anywhere (even at speed), built in lights and the bikes are locked onto it aswell.

I use a Saris Bones 3 for my CTR, I would say it would fit on a 205 no problem.

I have a 'Hollywood' bike rack that works well on the 205. I got it from my local bike shop for about £50.

One note though, a friend who also had a 205 and a similar rack managed to muller his rear windscreen wiper motor whilst attemting to clear the window with the rack and his bike attached (he 'forgot' the bikes were there) :(
