Originality V Modification

Hi all,

I have a very original Miami LE but wouldn't mind a bit more power, but not at the expense of the car losing value. What do you think about a Skip Brown Road Speed (GTI-S) conversion? Would this affect the value of my car negatively?

Thanks,

Dario

If your worried about the resale value, id leave the car as standard as possible. Tidy standard cars seem to be making more and more.

i agree hence i am keeping my current totally original 205 gti exactly as peugeot intended but i am always on the lookout for another if the price is right to play with ( read modify ) but only if it was already non original anyway! then i can have the best of both worlds hopefully lol! :)

I would say that considering the well established reputation of Skip Brown, and the fact that the GTI-S conversionfits the period of the car perfectly and only builds on the 8v's character rather than fundamentally changing the car, it could potentially increase the value of the car in years to come (although as per most modifications, you rarely see back what you spent on it).

If the modification is easily reversible, then there's no harm in doing it. In this case, so long as you keep al the original components, it is all reversible, except for the internal engine work (but why would you want to reverse that?!).

swap the flywheel for one that has crank sensor teeth and fit a decent ecu, that'll make a world of difference :)

you can mod from thereon to your hearts content, or just leave it totally standard.

it wont look any different other than binning the AFM and the DIzzy, which is a very good idea :D

I agree with that. I can see the original Skip Brown converted cars potentially selling for a small premium, although it would be to a comparitively niche market as I suspect that most people who would want a period performance modified 205 would go for something like a Turbo Technics converted car instead. The ones worth the money would probably be the original Phase 1 GTi-S's rather than the later cars.

To get a car freshly converted now would be somewhat questionable though, as there's better options out there for less money - it was good 25 years ago, but time has moved on (and that's coming from someone that owns one!)

To manners and driveability potentially, but not outright power/performance in my experience (which is what it sounds like the OP is after)

Thanks for the responses so far. I've spoken to Skip Brown and they have said that the Road Speed conversion won't make any visual difference to the engine bay, which is good. She is sending me some information in the post. However, it'll be the £3k+ that'll be the deciding factor, rather than keeping the car original!

My preference would be for period mods, but I'm sure that SB have moved with the times and that their conversion is as good as anyone else's? Wish they'd keep up with the times in other ways though - their website!

Something to think about anyway.

£3000? Does'nt make alot of sense when you can buy a decent gti6 converted one for less?

The problem with that is, its far from original.. though 3k is alot.. I'd just keep it standard, and if you want the speed, get a second 205 with a 6 would still be less than 3k :)

pointless in my opinion, if you want more power, fit a proper engine
