Noisy Speedo Cable?

Recommended Posts

Evening all.

This is my first time posting here so I'll give a little background; my car is a 1990 205 GR (1360) with me being only the second owner from new. Car is practically as new with only grief coming from parts perishing from age rather then mileage. Otherwise, what can I say? I'm smitten. It's my third car and by far the most fun to drive. Mum had a diesel variant probably ten years ago now; also loved it, only sold because we shifted countries.

Anyway, when I first bought the car it had a wobbly speedo. Didn't bother me and it's a feature of old cars. Alas, this wobble is now an incredibly annoying grinding sound. Doesn't always make it, but usually will after a cold night (or is that me imagining things?) or when at speed (ie north of 60MPH). It also has a tendency at speed to sway back and forth, probably not such a good thing if I ever get pulled over. Tried removing the dash last week and got about 90% of the way through when I found that I couldn't get the binnacle itself to budge. Odometer and Clock adjustment buttons in the way among other things. And so I come here, in the hope someone may enlighten me. Thinking that a spoonful of synthetic oil may solve the problem, but of course without being able to get to the bloody thing I can't try. I've heard speedo related problems are common, esp on RHD models.

Your thoughts, Ladies and Gentlemen.

Thanks in advance :)

Hello and welcome. Common fault on these old cars.

Buy a new cable.

To remove the binnacle/clock surround is easier if you lower the steering column slightly. First off remove the lower trim below the wheel ( bit with the cubby hole. There are 4 screws holding that in with a 10mm bolt going through the kick panel.

There's 4 studs the keep the steering column up, these are 11mm nuts. There are 4 nuts on 2 of the studs (6 in total) as there is a bracket with a few relays in place. Remove this to drop the back of the column.

It isn't to undo the nuts all the way but see what works for you.

Just remember to undo the 2 screws which go up into the lower part of the clock surround, these hold in steady onto the column surround trim.

Hope that makes sense i'm half asleep
