205 Rear Beam Torsion Bars & Arb Fit 309 Rear Beam?

Recommended Posts

rgp205

Hi,

I'm building a 205 sprint car out of a standard 1.6 gti and a 309 gti donor, using the 309 front & rear axles for the wider track, however been offered larger torsion bars & arb for the rear beam off of a 205 1.9 gti (ex-race car) but was wondering if they would fit?

Looking at the 309 beam it looks like the extra width comes from the frames at the end and not from the length of the beam itself...?

Thanks for your help,

Gary

The beam tube is longer on a 309 tube, and as such, you can't use shorter 205 bars with it.

Is there anything stopping you using the 205 beam with the bigger bars? This would be of much greater benefit than the 309 beams extra width.

Except for the cost, no. But if I'm spending that kind of money I'd rather have an uprated 309 beam and have both.

I find the 309 beam to upset the handling a bit. I've got a 309 beam on the GTI and a 205 beam on the GRD (with 309 wishbones) and I find the GRD handling much better.

GTI handling is a bit odd, doesnt turn in properly until it's fully loaded on the rear wheel and then it's pretty vicious.

I'm not a fan of 309 beams on 205s either, but then again I know people who love them!

Leave the 309 beam on the 309 ;)

I didn't like the 309's handling, and thought a standard 205 too twitchy, hoping the wider track will sort that but if not will go back to a 205 rear beam (but not the 1.6 that came off the car!)

Interesting comment, what do you have on the front of the GTI?

I assume you have a 205 rear beam on the GRD, and the 205 subframe with 309 wishbones (so ~17mm wider track) on the front?
