not critiscing anybody in name terms but being a newish member i have had some frosty responses for offering my assistance with the contacts i have does make me think twice to offer it on the forum at times. Personlly i think some members cant embrace change

 

or a get moaned out for trying make a bit money for my time think people expect everything for free

See this is part of the problem, if people think ~£200 for a brand new reproduction carpet is steeply priced, then how is any low volume production going to get started? Seems to be a bit of a theme with 205 GTI enthusiasts on here - tight as a nat's arse :ph34r:

I agree that £200 for a new carpet is pretty damned good.

 

The problem is however that here in the UK atleast you can still get a "good" carpet for a tenth of that, which after a good clean will be good enough for the vast majority of people, and hence the amount of serious interest in new carpets is going to be very limited.

 

That, coupled with the fact that the vast majority of 205's are still worth sub-£1500 means that the numbers interested in niche items with a comparatively large price tag like a new carpet is always going to be small - and that's before you factor in the well documented miserness of many on here.

 

205's are in a strange place at the moment, stuck half way between being proper classics and throwaway hot-hatches, and owned from everyone from those daily-driving as an only car on a shoestring to those who are pretty much signing blank cheques to have restorations done. Those two extremes aren't always going to sit comfortably alongside each other.

Yep, exactly my point earlier. But what always amuses me with this particular club is the somewhat delusional approach to 'worth'. I've seen it a lot over the years, I'm sure you have too. Some people just seem to expect custom parts for pocket change. Perhaps they've been spoiled by 205 parts being so damned cheap for years, but still, common sense should tell anyone that when you are dealing with custom parts and low volume production, you ain't necessarily going to get bargains!

 

I look at it quite simply - if you want (and this is where I have to make a distinction between 'want' and 'need'. A term that my wife seems to get the wrong way around all the time :rolleyes: ) nice fancy parts for your old classic, then you have to accept that these things are going to cost you. If you can't afford those items, then you simply have to make do without, or compromise, but don't whinge about the cost of fancy parts and/or expect those producing them to put in all the effort for your gain, with no reward.

 

And lastly, it also amuses me that many 205 owners will happily spend oodles on stuff like fancy suspension, but then complain when some relatively cheap reproduction parts are offered, because in their world, it doesn't seem like good value for money. Crazy!

Hear hear money is no object when it comes to mine, that doesnt mean i will spend on it till everything's brand new, more like if it needs something it will get the original part regardless of cost or the best quality versus price. Completely agree with every word you've said on this thread.

£200 for a new carpet is not alot in my opinion, especially when you consider how it's bright red and it's so visible in a GTI. It seems to me (I'm new to 205 ownership) that it's one of those items that very rarely come up for sale new and therefore can command £100s.

 

I agree with the comment earlier about the GTI's being in a funny price market, I've seen some beautiful cars on eBay etc and on this forum for sale at alot less than I would have guessed, yet there was a 68k GTI on eBay at £9995 and it's now listed as sold!! If they're going to get that kind of money well then rare parts that are usually worn will become big money very quickly

 

I'm a Capri 2.8i owner and last year a new old stock parcel shelf sold for £750, genuine Ford wings and front valances, if you can find them, are £500 and mint dashboards are now getting up to £300 - all weak points of a Capri. People scoff at the prices but when you consider a superb 280 Brooklands is £10k+ and concourse cars are £20k-30k, what's £750 for a parcel shelf that everyone sees??

 

P.s be grateful we're not looking after mk1 or mk2 Escorts where parts prices are concerned!!!!!

I all ways have a pot with money in ready to spend on my 205's it can be from single figures to tripple figures, I am not a big drinker or gambler but I have got a weak spot of peugeot 205's and in a way the is my down full, well thats what the wife thinks some times, but again I work with waste water all day every day and that has got to be one of the worse jobs out there but it gives me the funds to spend on my 205's and in tale I have got one of and well known 205's in the country.

 

I take my hat off to any man or woman that puts them selfs out to have some thing re produced for a 205 to keep the old girls going and for all of us to have shiney new bits on them.

 

I think we should do a poll of how meny of us owns 205's now and re do the poll in 5 or maybe even 10 years time and I feel save to say there wont be meny of these people ho dont like to spend as they have moved on to defferent things or in fact cheaper cars as there not happy to spend the cash, classic cars are a expensive hobby and in my 12 years of 205 ownership I have learned and stayed a head of people by buying up cheap 205's when no one wanted them and breaking them up for parts, there are only a few people I deal with for parts as I am not in it for the money but to keep mine on the road.

Just realised this topic had surfaced. £200 or less for a carpet might not be too unrealistic.

 

I went to see what carpet kits for old British cars fetch at Newton Commercial to discover they do a moulded carpet for the mk1 Golf. Low and behold its made to their own moulds in the UK. I'd assumed it would be Mexican sourced, but obviously not. £136 seems very surprising!

 

Might be worth a punt approaching them for a GB to justify moulds?
