New Big End Bearing Issues?

Hello all,

 

I am currently re-building my 205 1.9 GTI engine.

 

I have assembled the new thrust and main bearings back in the block. After this the crank could be turned with not much effort.

 

I then assembled the pistons with new rings into the bores and fitted the standard size big end bearings.

 

I then tried to turn the crank with the conrods attached and it required very high amounts of force to turn the crank (almost all body weight) but once i did get it turning it seemed to move a bit free'er.

 

I have used engine assembly lube on all the bearing's whilst fitting, which is almost like treacle.

 

When i loosen all the conrod bolts the crank turns again with not much effort.

 

I dont understand?? Could it be the engine assembly lube as its very sticky, treacle like??? I

 

I cant imagine that it would be??!!!

 

Im going to check the journal diamaters next week again, but dont think there at fault.

 

In the mean time anyone have any ideas???

What size are the bearings? Just wonder if you fitting undersize bearings on a standard journal.

Standard size bearings and caps on the right way.

 

Although im begining to think ive installed the pistons round the wrong way!!!! ive got the marking 'DIST' and arrow pointing towards flywheel end.

 

I think this is wrong???!!!

'Dist' points towards the cam belt as from what most people think it doesn't mean Distributor, Good thing you said that or it would have been a fail.

yeah it was my fault, i havent done a 205 engine in a while and didnt mark the pistons which way around they went!!!!

 

Hopefully this will help when i switch them around!!!!!!!

You could just check if it is the cause by turning the engine the other way round.

Take the caps off and see where the bearings are rubbing.

Turned the pistons around and no joy, still the same!!!!

 

The parts suppliers have sent me over another set of bearings for the engine basically exactly the same.

 

They are both for the same crankshaft journal size and conrod big end diameter but the thinkness of the metal is 0.006 mm thinner !!

 

To be honest i cant see this would help at all??!!!!!

 

These are the only two standard sets it could be accourding to the parts catalogue for the bearings.

 

 

Just to check also with regards to the conrod caps should the cap cut out be at the same side as the conrod cutout/notch.

The main bearings are fine, the cranks turns ok without the conrods connected.

 

As far as i can see the caps are on the right way with both bearing cutouts at the same end.

 

with the bearings fitted at the moment its not so tight that it cant be turned, just needs quite some force to get it moving. It maybe enough with the 0.006mm difference in thickness??????

Get some plastigauge and measure your bearing clearances. Then you will be able to see for sure if you have a problem or not.

I did just have a look around the web and on the ford CVH engine they state that big end clearances must be between 0.006 - 0.060 MM.

Going by this the new set of bearings they have supplied should be ok???

You cannot possibly know by measuring the bearing or crank alone. As I said in my earlier post, plastigauge will show you straight away if the problem is crank brgs or not. Personally I use it anyway when building a bottom end, but in your situation now its a must.

Ok, i will turn them all around. I have already tried them the other way to check if its any different and they are still tight.

 

Starting to get bloody annoying.

Grooves go opposite each other,and you need to try plastigauge,it will tell you instantly whether the clearance is too tight.

Still no good even with new bearings fitted. Im tired of the hassle not knowing what is going to be right!!!!!

 

Got a replacement rebuilt bottom end coming friday!!!!!

 

Cant wait for it too arrive, the bearing suppliers cant work out why they are wrong
