Recommended Posts

hi everyone

came across this, is this even possible by just uprating the fuel pump?? surely if it is everyone would be doing it, with the way deisels going up.

I've read a little into it and I have a friend who does conversions but it seems you can do it without - although it all depends on the quality of oil you're running on how reliable its going to be.

Cooking oil isn't as cheap as it was either and I imagine funnelling in 20ltrs fresh out of bottles is a bit of an inconvenience.

My next 205 will be a shed (either a 1.1 or a non turbo diesel) but I'd certainly consider doing it, it'd have to be in a car I cared little about though.

You can any diesel on oil, just need to filter it a lot if its been used to cook with(smells like chips). We use to use it at college to run the rigs from the canteen. Need to put something in it to stop it freezing in the winter.

One of my former colleagues ran his Astra diesel on cooking oil - his uncle worked in an old folks home, so he got it for free as they had to otherwise pay to dispose of it. He was tighter that two coats of paints - a constant source of amusement to the rest of us. :) I'm sure his car share with the other guys ran at a handsome profit. I think he diluted regular diesel to save having to faf around beyond just filtering it.

This was the guy that came on his first office night out armed with £10.

There's two types of diesel injector pump found on PSA diesel engines, and that determines whether you can run veg

Bosch pumps will run on even neat veg (and I've done it) but Lucas-CAV pumps don't take kindly to it and are liable to fail in fairly short order.

Even with diesel prices as they are, it makes a lot less sense now than it did a few years back unless you've a source of used oil and are prepared to put in the time and effort to making it suitable to run - fresh veg oil is around the same price as diesel, rather than less than half the price when I did it.

I always wondered what kind of economy it returned...surely its not as good as actual diesel? or is it?

i ran my 306 50/50 on it.... that was on the lucas pump. didnt smoke as much and it was screwed a wee bit. I would reccomend the bosch pump if you plan on doing it though as it has stronger internals. If you want to do it properly you need to heat your fuel lines and start it on diesel and shut it down on diesel.... clears the system so itll start the day after.

on a old car with a bosch pump its fine if you have a lucus pump dont do it as they will leak.i ran a old merc on about 50% veg in winter and about 70% in summer with no proplems.i would recomend carrying a spare fuel filter with you just in case.you can run up to 2500 liters without having to pay tax[whos counting] the only proplems i found was the smell so dont reverse into your garage.
