Fitting A Xsara Steering Rack

Recommended Posts

markw

I have bought a xsara steering rack for my none PAS 205 sprint car, doing some measuring it seems the xsara track is about 40mm

wider than the 205 one, measuring roughly 20mm wide each side, it seems the 205 track rods(the bar bit the the track rod ends screw into) need fitting to the xsara rack, to reduce the overall width, how do i get the track rods off the rack,

the reason i ask is becasue my 205 ones are in much better condition to the s*itroen ones.

cheers

Get the rack in a vice, a pair of stilsons will have them off. They use a strange lock washer effort to stop them coming undone, really you ought to replace these.

do you mean try and pull the ball ends of the track rods out of the socket???

No, undo the housing that has the ball joint. With the boot pulled back you will see. The ball joint has a male threaded part that screws into the end of the rack.

Alternatively, if the track rods are in good order then you can just cut them down, as generally they are threaded pretty far down. As long as you cut them square so the lock nut sits flush there's no real issue IMO.

Take off the PAS ram and pipes and block up the holes, it's a very common conversion.

is it any heavier than the normal 205 rack though?

I know the turn is lot less and so is pas 205 rack

The Xsara's don;t use the lock tab's inc 306, only the 205's had these, so I tend to use some bearing fit on the threads
