High Oil Temp

Recommended Posts

firstcar_205gti

on a long gurney or driving fast the oil temp sits at just over 3/4 and sometimes higher :( its a standard 1.9 with an oil cooler but the oil cooler is behind the bumper, maybe should be behind the grill for more air i dunno. i had a standard 1.6 with no oil cooler and it never went over 1/2 on the gauge.

Is it an aftermarket cooler or do you mean the cooler is the standard one (I'm guessing not; it fits in the right hand side of the fan cowling, where the second fan would be on a twin setup)?

Anyways - sensor? Hardly high accuracy temperature senders, these, but if you've fitted an aftermarket cooler (if it's standard, my question would be why - it shouldn't really need one) out of the airflow it won't really do much.

I wouldn't worry too much at this stage if it's only happening after some spirited driving; might just be down to guage inaccuracies... has it always been like that or recently changed?

I'd be putting the same into a road car.

The standard oil cooler you've got is pretty pathetic to be honest, I've never heard anyone say it effectively does much. I guess there's a slim chance it's blocked but I doubt you'd see much improvement if it was and you cleared it! Or, likewise, if you removed it entirely.

I assume the sandwich plate has a thermostat in it (someone else can probably verify) - if so maybe that's dodgy. Even then, I wouldn't worry about 3/4 on the gauge if that's the most it goes to and only on high speed runs/etc. If you're that worried, consider verifying the oil temperature with an accurate gauge/sender - even if it's going for a run, draining a little into a cup and sticking a thermometer in it to get an idea!

Miles

Check the sensor and instrument first, if none of these then your bearings could be going

ok thanks man, i might try it with a better oil cooler see if it does anything if not then i'll just leave it be.
