Power Steering Leak.

Recommended Posts

Ivelostmypants

I've currently got a power steering leak on my 1.9 miami blue limited ed, however It's only really when driving, and has made it hard to observe quite where it's coming from when static.

Does anyone know any common faults, seals, or probs with these that I might want to check first? As i've not really got a clue about it. The car is currently not starting due to a wiring loom problem so I'm also unable to drive it to get a decent leak show anywhere on the system.

Any help with this would be very much appreciated!

Jack the car up, get on your back and get under it :)

Really though, get a torch (reflects on any wet areas) and find any drops or leaks and look above where they are. Also look for any damp or wet looking areas and when you find them work your way up and you should find the leak.

That's not necessarily going to show where the leak is coming from as often fluid gets flicked and sprayed everywhere during driving.

Your best cleaning it all off with brake cleaner then going for a drive. Then check it over.

Most likely the pinion seal. It's just an age thing. It's not hard to replace once the rack is out. The other problem is cracking of the two small pipes. This happens if the ram bush wears, allowing it to move about.
