Did this today (but I was nowhere near as thorough) - I just cleaned the motor cover out and brightened up the commutator a bit. i didn't bother taking the linkage apart, just lubed it a bit.

 

Previously the wipers were making a screeching noise (you could hear it 100 yards away) and stalling frequentl/ moving/jerking very slowly.

 

After a bit of a clean up they are working perfectly (and almost silently) esp on top speed.

 

Well worth a half an hour of your time and free too.
