Paint It Or Wrap It?

Recommended Posts

BlueBolt

Having just got myself an auto bonnet, I'm in need of colour change for it...

I'm thinking of matt black, it's not the standard bonnet for the car so the original will be kept in the garage at the inlaws house, with it's little dimple thanks to my own handiwork the other day...

Having spoken to a mate who wants some experience/practise spraying panels up, I woke up this morning and thought about having it wrapped instead of painted...

Has anyone had any panels wrapped on their cars before or got any experience in it? Anyone able to recommend any vinyl wrap shops in Kent to me? I'm quite happy to go through google search results but thought I'd see if anyone had any experience with any first?

Gettin to the main point of the thread... What's the general opinion on wrapping panels??

I think a black/carbon wrap would look pretty good on a Miami!

How much is it just for a panel? I suppose the bonnet is pretty simple comapared to other panels?

Not looked into price, but I'm thinking it's going to be a load cheaper to wrap than to paint... I like the idea of a carbon bonnet, but not carbon wrap, my thinking is that if it's carbon look it needs to be carbon if you know what I mean??

Yeah, I suppose it'll stop the 'is that a carbon bonnet?' question, followed with you awkwardly answering 'No, its just pretend...'

'No, its just pretend...'

That's pretty much exactly my reason for not wanting it lol

The wrap has other benefits like the lack of stone chips, ease of colour change, and from what I've heard, cheaper than paint too...?? Just don't m kw anyone who has had it done....

Two friends of mine wrap cars on the side, but I'm in maidenhead Berkshire. I can get you a price if you like. One has done the course that exists.

That would be good if for nothing else than comparison...

Thanks :)

It's like anything. You can buy cheap wrapping vinyl and the job will therefore become cheaper. If you wanted decent quality wrap, the materials are obviously going to be more expensive. Likely to be easier to apply though. It's down to the installation costs then.

I've been doing a bit of signwriting recently with the intention of increasing my workload, and wrapping is something I intend to look in to.

A wrapping course is very expensive yet worth it's weight in gold for people in the industry obviously.I have someone wanting their roof boot and bonnet doing soon on the understanding I have no experience of applying it, only that of applying normal in similar large areas. They were going to give it a punt themself anyway.

Overheads of a company doing it as a profession I can see coming in close to a spray job.

If you're going to go to the effort of getting it wrapped you may as well get something that couldn't be painted, otherwise you may as well get your mate to paint it.

Appreciate what you're saying about not wanting a 'carbon fibre effect' bonnet, but a coloured carbon would look quite good imo and a little less 'obvious' (and can you get coloured carbon?? )

It's not the standard bonnet for the car else I would keep it the right colour...

I'm not a fan of the carbon-esc thing, but that's not to say I don't like it on other peoples cars, just not on my own, would rather have the real deal, but no chance of affording it lol

Been advised that the plastidip stuff is good, and very easy to apply... I'm going to give that a try and see how it goes, if it turns out looking rubbish then I'll get it sprayed, or wrapped, depending on if I can make my mind up by then lol

Dogboy has a red "Auto bonnet" dan and myself removed from an SPI 1.6 auto, I nabbed the coilpack and thermostat housing from it :)

Lmao

Me neither!! I've got it but haven't unwrapped it yet, I'll be checking tonight when I get in tho!!

Either way, I put a dimple in my bonnet by shutting it on something the other day so I'll be replacing the bonnet and seeing if I can work out a way of getting the gas struts off a 406coupe bonnet to fit and work without too much hassle at the same time...

In 2k as well which is more stone chip resistant.

That's the main reason behind thinking of the wrap so I'll have to keep that in mind...

If the bonnet you're referring to was mine, then it does not have the bulge, as the car was injection and not carbed as Miles said may be the case earlier.

Sorry to go off topic - but is the injection version the same as a standard bonnet then?

the XU5M used the "auto" bonnet, but an auto gti would be a standard bonnet.

XU5M was an SPI 1.6 with a coilpack, basically a glorified carb with an injector instead of a needle and a float.

yep, he said 120 for the bonnet give or take.

I have a sample of that blue in my car, its remarkably close to Miami....

Wrapping shows up imperfections in the bodywork underneath, so sometimes you need to fill and filler primer before painting.. If the panels are straighter it makes things easier.

Cheers
