Mk2 Golf 20V Turbo

Recommended Posts

I'm going with a friend to have a look at one of these.

Doe's anyone know much about them, I've told him to ask about anyway.

It's 225 bhp 250 lb/ft so should be quite quick I would have thought.

How are VW for rust, I think the car is a 91 or 92 .

Is there anything obvious I should be looking for ?

I know it's the wrong forum all together but thought I would ask and see.

hit and miss on the rust i think 89 was the best year, tailgate rust, lower door rust, sill rust, under the plastic arches is also a spot, both front and rear valences for rust, leaks! sunroof, check door cards to see if there damp, scuttle panel blocking and subsenquently filling the footwells boot seal leaking and filling the spare tyre bay, electrics are usually good and most standard mechanicals are also good

I've had dubs... look behind the headlights on the chassis rails on the mk2s (i went to look at a couple and they all had it) then it's just the usual spots... under the car, arch rust is pretty common, even under the trims.

As for the engine.... they are rapid!!!

Boot/tailgate, sill, aches (under the plastic arches) are common places for mk2's to rust. But give it a good check all over like you would any other old car, there alot worse than 205's for rust.

Engine should be good, if its had regular oil changes. Iv got a mk4 gti (unfortunately) as a daily and its done just less than 200,000 and still going strong. Mk2 with 20v turbo's are stupidly fast...

Cheers guys,

So the opinion is it will be quick, We/He should find out tomorrow.

Done a bit of digging myself and apparantly when doing the conversion the standard mounting brackets need to be changed along with a few other bits n bobs. Theres quite a bit of info on the tinter web about these.

Seems to be quite a popular conversion all the same.

Kerb weight off a Mk2 must be near 1000kg so with the above power it should be fast.

Not a lot less, but less none the less lol

According to Carfolio, it should be in the region of 250 bhp/ton???

At 225bhp per ton it will be quick, a mk2 Golf turbo (or supercharged - I have no idea what was under the bonnet) was gently pulling away from my FSTi in the autobahn yesterday  (I don't know if I had downshifted it might have been better though)

Was it a flared arch G60 Rallye? Some of those are tweaked and rather quick, 4x4, 2l supercharged, no?

It was not flared as far as I remember, I thought it would be a G60 one, all I know is when it went on boost there was a small brown cloud from the exhaust, the car squat down and pulled like a train. He pulled over before exiting the autobahn and gave me the thumbs up, so did I :D

Ive always been told 250hp per ton is the bench mark for a "fast car"

the e36 m3 is around 260, most scoobs start at 250hp and evos etc etc..

Given that, like our old 205s, they could have any number of different engine combos retro fitted, then there's not really any point in trying to guess at what it was.

As someone who used to want a Mk2 GTI sooooo badly before I got in to 205s, I've always had a soft spot for the 20v Turbo conversions. But then I've also always fancied a VR6 converted one, or an R32 converted one, or a 16v G60, or......(you get the picture :D ).

Going back about 10 years now, my work colleague was running about in an E36 328 with about 200bhp, so not massively fast, but quick enough, and he had a mate who was in to Golfs. He said that on the motorway at about 70-80, his mate in his 20v turbo Mk2 would pull away like his E36 was stood still.

All i can say is check electrics! Only problems ive ever had with mine is all electrical. Other then that engine wise everything is solid. Bodywise Mk2s pretty much in the usual old car places

I don't know where you get your figures for the M3, according to http://www.carfolio....?car=54967&l=de it is 195 bhp/ton and the E46 around 200.

A "typical" FSTi has 206-226 bhp/ton or so but it weighs more than the official figures.

It certainly doesn't feel slow but it's all relative ;)

That site doesn't give the per ton and is for a 3.0..

They weigh in around 1400kg so that divided by 286 or 321.. But using there weight of 1460.

200 for the 3.0

230 for the 3.2.

Every site you read though gives different answers.

You can calculate the bhp per ton:

286 bhp 1460kg

x 1000kg

x = 286 * 1000/1460 = 195

The E46 M3 weighs 1570kg

Funnily enough, a chap who did a bit of tig welding for me yesterday told me about two mk2 golfs in wycombe, one is a vr6 engine on cams, the latter is again, a vr6 bit with an 8psi supercharger. It came across a big power evo that was on a test run and left it behind up the bypass. Runs on steelies looks rough, when asked what's under the bonnet he cheekily said 'a 1.8 mate' evo mans face fell. He he.

Vr6 sounds rather fab in my humble opinion.

Yeah the 205's would be quick..

That is oem though and basic weight loss can see a 150kg diet with ease.

There are two brothers round me who both have VR6 turbos. One in a Corrado (420bhp) and one in a mkII Golf (460bhp). They sound amazing but needless to say they are leathal! Both front wheel drive and both look standard until you spot the hidden intercooler at the front.

Lol, it depends how deep one's pockets are I guess and what his priorities are!

It's not all about straight line power but it's nice to have a sleeper to surprise the "big boys" sometimes.
