Wiring Trouble

Recommended Posts

jonb_5

Hi,

I cannot start my car at the moment and it ran not so long ago.

The only things I have changed really is stripping out some of what I thought was unnecessary wiring.

Anyway, I have a spark but have put a multi-meter on one of the injector plugs and this is grounded but there is no voltage.

I think the ECU may not have any power.

So my question is what wires should be going to it. It is a 1.6 GTi.

Is there any simple way I can check if it has power, i.e should one of the wires going to it be a switched live?

None of the wiring is taped up so I can track it all back etc, as far as I can see other than the wires going to the injectors, there are 2 large green wires, 1 goes to the back of the instrument panel and one goes to the box near the battery tray with the plugs in it. The last wire is yellow, I am assuming an earth.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Jon

There should be a constant 12v feed from the shuntbox to the fuel pump relay under the dash (thick brown wire)

That relay also powers the injectors, and does fail fairly commonly - easy enough to bypass for testing by using a couple of lengths of appropriate wire to link all three of the thick wires (one brown, two white) together which will make the injectors live and the fuel pump run constantly regardless of the ignition position or engine running.

If you've got spark then you should have a decent ground, switched ignition and timing signal.

Thanks for the response.

I have a thick brown wire from the shuntbox going to a connector, (appears to be double sided) which is the connected to the battery positive, On the other side of the connector comes out 2 large brown wires which run to the fuse box, no large brown wires appear to run to under the dash?

I do have a small brown and 2 white going in to the relay under the dash, should the brown be a switched live? I can check this? When you say link all 3 wires together, do you mean just touch all 3 of the ends together?

Thanks

Jon

OK

Had the car started this afternoon, traced all wiring etc and checked all terminal boxes and tried to start which is now has.

It sounds like it is not running on all cylinders, I have voltage on each of the injector terminals now, which I did not before and have a spark.

Any ideas.

Thanks

Jon
