A Unique Gti From Down Under

Recommended Posts

NNN

About 2 weeks ago a very interesting add appeared in one of the classic car websites here in Argentina. A 1500 mile (2600km) 1995 1.9 red GTI with an asking price of 50000USD. Did´t think it was for real until last Saturday... when the owner... an extremely nice individual let me and some other members of our owners club get together at his garage and spend some time with some of his very unique and beautiful toys. Among them... this GTI... that`s absolutely amazing. There were other cars worth mentioning, like a bmw 850, a 15000 mile 2.0 Mi16, a really nice Clio Williams, some Renault Fuegos and some others I can`t remember since I was very busy looking at the 205.

A 1995 GTI is not uncommon here, although most of them are 92 or 93... but I had never seen any with less than 20000 miles... it was really something... about 2+ hours that were worth much more than the complaints of my girlfriend!!

This is the original topic from our forum... some of the photos I posted here and the others are linked.

I hope you enjoy this as much as we did...

Looks lovely, and in the best colour.

Quite like the 405 mi16 too, wouldn't mind one of those as a daily!

F€ck me!

This must be the lowest mileage and mintiest (if there is such a word!) 205 Gti in the world!

A very nice collection but does he not drive his cars?!

Awesome example! Its actually still red, even the british 'sun' turns them pink usually. Is that a space saver spare tyre? Love that 405 aswell (maybe a little more) though!

Argentinian sun does exactly the same thing... I have managed to protect mine over the years with a very thick layer of dirt... it actually works!! LOL

The only 1.9 130hp GTI with the steering wheel in the left and correct side of the car I`ve seen with side repeaters is mine... and we still cannot figure out why. All the other don`t, except some 94-95 spanish ones with the plastic inlet and no sunroof!!

That`s a Renault Fuego... an old time classic here from 88-92 aprox. 2.0 or 2.2 liter 8v. I don`t like them much since we barely see one in good condition... but that one (he had 2... that red one and another in silver grey) looked rather nice.

Amazing, but $50,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The owner didn`t say but as far as I know he bought it for something like 25-30k usd. That`s what I was told.

Didn't late models come with Motronic and a catalyst in Argentina?

I may be wrong, but I think catalytic converters were introduced and mandated earlier in europe than much of the rest of the world. (apart from the more forward looking California)

Stunning car :D Lots of helpful pictures particularly showing the aircon, which is useful for retrofitting :)al

Fantastic!! it's amazing to see a factory fresh car like that. It makes all the 'restored' examples around look a bit weak.

Actually... yes... but over the years I have seen so many different 94-95 GTIs that I it`s very confusing. Some have no sunroof, no PAS, cat and plastic inlet... some others are non cat with sunroof but no PAS like this one... others are cat`d with alum inlet and ABR... a have no idea why...

My car looked like a trashcan when i got back home... that car is as wonderful as it is depressing...

Pictures don`t help... but it might also have to do with how unused it is... leather seems to get shinier over the years with use... other 2001 GTI I saw some time ago had not so shiny leather as well.. it had been retained by customs for quite a few years...

I would bet my 4 205s that there's at least a couple tucked away with only delivery mileage.

I'm sure Peugeot will have a couple tucked away with 0 miles. I'm pretty sure there's a guy somewhere in Hampshire (I forget exactly where) who has a 1.6 and two 1.9's with only delivery mileage and still in delivery packing. Never seen any photos though so whether it's fully true I guess you'll never know unless something comes up at an auction or pistonheads etc.

Peugeot must have some of course. Last year at the museum in Sochaux there was an 89 GTI I believe. A can´t remember the differences apart from the "plain" crankcase.... with 10 miles at the most...

Certainly a lovely car and colour but how could you resist driving it on every sunny day.... I thought mine was low at 140K.

By the way cheers from down under ( the Australian version )

Stunning example. Definitely something odd going on with the dash though.

Mind you, those late model Spanish 205 GTI 1.9's must have been a "parts bin" job.

For instance, I've just acquired a 1993 one, with late model tailgate, plastic inlet, power steering but Ph2 cloth seats.
