Changing Car Stereo Lighting Colour

Recommended Posts

I managed to get a 1997 Pioneer 645R CD/radio with remote control and 6 disc changer on Ebay, brand new unused and boxed for £70 delivered a few weeks ago. Sounds good but looks a little bit retro and therefore more fitting in a 205.

Because of it's age, I could not find out what colour it lit up (nowt on Google) - the typical thing is, it lights up green, not orange.

Are these bulbs easy to swap over and has anyone done this?

I know it's an odd request but the bloody thing is driving me up the wall and looks awful.

Thanks in advance.

I assume there's no way of changing the illumination colour in a menu on the headunit is there?

Sounds silly I know, but the ancient Alpine tape head unit (proper retro :D) in my 306 can switch between green and amber illumination, but to do so involves a few button presses that takes me ages to figure out whenever I've had the battery disconnected as it defaults to green...

If not, chances are it isn't the bulbs themselves that are green, but rather a coloured plastic filter - only question is whether that is changeable.

Thanks Anthony.

I used to have a 545R that was green/orange so I thought the 645R would be the same, but no.

I have a lower spec Pioneer CD player too, a 345R (with orange illumination but no changer control) that I may take apart and have a look before I touch the new one. Fingers crossed the parts are inter-changable as the buttons are broadly the same on both as they are from the same era.

Thanks for the reply anyway.

With it being new in the box, is there nothing in the instructions to alter the colour? I seem to recall that it was an option on a lot of stereos. I know my Apline does it and I think the Sony cassette I have does too.

CD changer - pah! Get an iPod old man :P

Thanks Henry.

I have read the intructions 10 times and can't find anything on changing the display colour - gutted. I may have to take the orange 345R apart and a see what determines the colour. Hopefully I can sway one into the other - that said, the last screw will launch 1000 springs and clips all over the place, no doubt.

CD changer was only £25 and brand new - most of my music is on CD and I rarely use my Ipod so a CD changer looked like the retro way to go!

it should be in the manual, and the manual should also be online if you don't have a copy.

I was shocked this morning when my music suddenly stopped during the morning commute and my girlfriend's voice started coming out of the speakers.. bluetooth handsfree is still a strange beast to a luddite like me!!

Called Pioneer UK today and after trawling their archives - they confirmed green only for this model - bugger.

Took it apart and there are 10 or so minute LEDs that look transparent but light up green.

Decided to paint a few red with a hope they will look more orange than green when they power up - I'll see tomorrow.

No doubt I'll have to scrape the paint off them as they will look s*ite.

Yeah, I did expect a frosty reception with such a strange request - but I was apologetic from the start and had call back in 15 mins from a very helpful chap in the technical unit who had located the tech spec - spot on, well except for the bad news, that is!

The bloody thing cheesed me off so much, I bought another Pioneer stereo with orange display which I can connect to the changer.

Has Bluetooth and 3.5mm aux jack in too, Henry!

I bet that has got you puzzled. Ask your dentist about the first option as they know all about it..
