1.9 8V Stalls When Cold, Air Flow Meter Or Auxillary Air Valve?

Hi my 1.9 8v will not idle when its cold am i right in saying its either the cold start valve or air flow meter? if both which one shall i try changing first???

Could be either, neither, or a combination of both.

 

Everything has to work and be set just right for these car to start and idle perfectly, and as such there are many possible culprits to cause poor cold start/idle.

 

Out of the two, it's more likely to be the AFM - the SAD (or cold start valve as you're calling it) is rarely actually at fault in my experience, despite the fact that it is almost uniformly blamed by people for the issues who generally don't understand how it works.

it'll be a combination of everything being royally messed up usually, best course of action is to sit down with the haynes workshop manual and have a good read, then starting afresh with the throttle initial position throttle switch then AFM and so on.

If the throttle body & whole intake system is clean & set correctly, the last 205 I worked on with cold start idle problems were fixed by swapping the AFM for a different one.

 

I agree with Anthony, it's rarely the SAD that's at fault when cold idle is messed up.

Haynes manual covers this in alot of detail, you need a multimeter and some general hand tools. I think you may also need access to a emission machine?
