Scrapping Shells, What To Keep?

Recommended Posts

I'm scrapping 2 shells, looking for advice on what body parts to keep. I compete in rallying & spare body panels are always useful. :P

One shell is a GTI non sunroof shell that a guy had used to reshell a smashed diesel. The floor pan is really rotted from the back seats to the boot latch. The headlight panel & inner/outer front wings are well gone too. The rest of the shell is good - even the bottom of the b-posts show no rot!

I'm keeping the roof skin, doors, bonnet & boot lid, is it worth chopping of anything else? I was thinking about the sills & rear 1/4 panels as they are all sound.

I intend to strip the shafts out of the back axle to use for refurbishing an axle. Is the gearbox worth keeping?

The other shell is a sunroof turbo diesel. There are patches of bad rot all over the car & it's hard to know what to keep. The car spent a good few years near the coast & the salt air has taken its toll. I had started to patch up the car but I eventually realised it was beyond saving. Might keep the front end as it's in reasonable nick. The sills & floor pan are well gone. I'll keep the front & rear suspension as they are the same as a GTI, what about a td gearbox?
