Worth A Punt? 307 2.0 Hdi

I'm really wanting to move my Alfa 166 on now in favour of something cheap and practical. Something that I can not only transport large parts about without giving a s*it about messing up the interior, but also use for temporary storage whilst I'm working on the 205 (I really need to re-start progress this year). So the awkward saloon boot of the Alfa is a no-no.

Whilst having a browse of Autotrader to see what's about in my area, I came across http://www.quality-usedcars.co.uk/used-cars/peugeot-307-2-0-hdi-110-d-turbo-5dr-ac-edinburgh-201206447760095

It's certainly well used! High mileage, scrape along the NS sill, broken rear wiper arm, and mismatched reg number in the photos ( ). But it's also cheap and seems to be quite well specced for a crappy cheap Pug.

So what's the general consensus on the 307? I'm slightly dubious because I remember the awful reputation for their abundance of electrical failings. I know the Pug diesel's tend to be good engines, so what in general should I look out for if I go to view this?

nice cars, comfy seats good on fuel, good engines.

listen for noisy/ticking injectors, rattly noises from the DMF vibration through the clutch pedal, dont know of any other things to check, don't go wrong that often.

a friend recently picked up a 16v xsi hdi, the 136, same interior and exterior but smaller wheels.

132k is not high mileage at all, but do check when the belt was done, they're 100k intervals on them IIRC.

thats a 110bhp so its a very good chance its fap equipped which are a nightmare to get right if it goes tits up. comm 2000's (indicator switch/waiper switch) are another weak point. they either dont cancel the indicators or flick the opposite one on when exited a roundabout for example. abs lights are common, usually down to failed rear abs sensors. rear coilsprings break regular as well. hdi's are pretty bomb proof as long as there serviced and the belts are changed along with the waterpump. belts are due between 90 to 96k depending on service intervals.

there not bad cars to be honest, but personally id look at a focus, much better car with a lot more talent.

Someone on here had one for several hundred didn't they a while back? It may have been a petrol though.

Concidered a 306? 306 HDi will be cheaper to buy, look better on your driveway and suprising large luggage space with the seats down.

Electrical faults were a pain in the ass with mine. But in hindsight, i think i purchased a rather abused example and I was glad to see the back of it.

Nice place to sit though, plenty of space, i'm sure the 2.0 has plenty of grunt unlike my 1.4 (hugely underpowered for such a fatass car). Handled "ok" too.

Might be worth a punt after a thorough test drive. Be prepared to buy brake light bulbs every few months though :)

As much as I appreciate the feedback, please don't bother suggesting alternative cars.

Up here in Edinburgh, the used car market is crap. If you want anything specific, you have to be prepared to travel for it. Even mundane things like 306s and Focus, although normally common, aren't exactly ten a penny around here (just depends when you happen to be looking). My current search is being kept local.

If I decide I really fancy something very specific, then I will travel, but it's not a cheap exercise in a 3.0 Alfa! I went all the way down to London last weekend to part-ex the Alfa on a Saab 9-3 HOT Aero, but it didn't work out. So that's over £200 down the drain, but at least we had a nice weekend break out of it!

I like the 307, granted its no direct comparison to the 306, but it was never intended to be, and this would be cheaper than a 306 DTurbo HDI which are quite sought after.

Look after it and I doubt you will lose much on its value.

Don't care about it value :P If I did buy it, I'd just run it in to the ground for a few years! ;)

We have a 307 hdi SW at work & I've spent a good bit of time behind the wheel.

Not a bad drive but the 406 hdi estate I picked up is nicer imo, even with the 90bhp hdi engine.

Certainly comfy enough & same decent economy as most diesel nowadays.

If you just want something cheap to run & store stuff, why not get a 406 hdi, as much car but possibly even cheaper!!

Cos there ain't one for sale locally in my budget.

However, there is a Xsara estate with the 110 HDI engine for sale locally, and it's on my list of considerations. Plus side being more space, down side being no cruise control. As sad as it may sound, cruise control is the one thing I find it difficult to compromise n now that I've had it (obviously the 205 will be an exception to the rule when I eventually get it back on the road). With trips down to Devon taking at least 7.5 hours with only me driving, I can't bear to do it without CC these days.

I've hada 307 HDI90 for about 7 years now and have done 40k in it. It has been great. Cambelt jumped and snapped the woodruff key on the cam pulley, but being 8v then all the valves were ok when they touched the pistons as I had it compression checked after. They are designed to break the rockers, not bend valves.

If you get an early 90 they are very economical and don't have the dual mass issues or FAP. Electrical wise, mine has been spot on. The sloppy handling that people talk about is often attributable to 70 profile tyres on 15" wheels. Mine was transformed on 50 profile 17" wheels.

I find mine more than ample on a fast B road as you learn not to brake and drive properly through corners and retain your speed. Left foot braking is advantageous as you can get the back to move around nicely and despite being fly-by-wire it allows throttle and brake (unlike my Honda)

Interior is pretty well laid out and hard wearing. Wishbones and ball joints have been changed on mine (Sheffield potholes)

Personally I think the 5dr works better than the 3 door aesthetically. 3drs tend the be cheaper though

The 307 looked like a piece of s*it. I didn't bother to look inside it or start it up etc (because their wasn't even any staff around to ask) but it was certainly well used judging by the very war-scarred bodywork, so I didn't fancy it. I also didn't fancy the Saab 9-3 2.0 SE with only 56k on the clock for £2000. It must have lived the hardest 56000 miles of any car I've ever seen.........or it wasn't really 56k

However, I have just stuck a deposit down on a V70 T5 SE B) 86k on the clock (well under average!) with only 2 previous owners, totally standard and very tidy. Beautiful colour, I believe the Volvo name for it is "metallic pensioner" (champagne), with full cream/tan/beige leather. An absolute s*it ton of space in the back for 205 parts, aftermarket reversing sensor (tow bar), and now I have to try and resit the temptation to stick a dirty big exhaust on it to get the full 5 pot burble
