Twin Fan Install Without Relays

Recommended Posts

chipstick

I've got some twin fans and couling from a 1.8 diesel.

I got some loom and a box of relays, but i'm beginning to think I didn't get enough.

I remember reading that the wiring for twin fans is already there? And the relays/loom is only needed if you want them to be dual speed.

I am quite happy to have both fans kick in at the same point my current one does. To be fair, my current single fan operates at the left-middle line and never goes above it. Was expecting it to run hotter. I think my rad has a lower temp sensor fitted, so this probably helps. My couling is cracked and weakens the slam panel, so that's my main reason for changing.

So should I be able to find a second grey plug on my existing loom, and just plug and play with one speed yet two fans without sourcing a relay loom?

No, the wiring for the 2nd fan isn't present on a standard GTi fan loom.

Some people splice in a second fan to the existing wiring, but I'm really not a fan of that as it's putting a hell of a lot of current through the feeble fan switch.

If you want twin fans (and I generally ask the question why - if it's getting too hot with one then you've another issue) then just run the diesel setup with the relays - if you've the black box with three relays and the attached wiring, it sounds like you have everything.

I was wondering if it was worthwhile fitting another fan in the spare'ole on my car? It always has run hot when idling in stationary traffic, specially in the summer. Then have available to either come in at a hotter temp, or switch it manually? Any thoughts please?

Ooops! You beat me to it!

Are there different temp radiator switches?

I don't want to go down the splicing route and overload the wiring.

I have no need for twin. As I say it gets to the line after a while and kicks in and then goes back down and maintains that sort of temperature. I notice a fair few people have the gti6s running hot, perhaps they don't bleed them properly.

My main reason for asking was that I need a new couling as mine is cracked in a few places and he top left and right slam panel fixings are missing so the panel flexes at speed. The 205 I was pilfering bits from happened to have twin fans in excellent condition so I removed it. I suppose I could remove one of the fans and use it as the standard 1 fan set up, but as its twin I thought I may as well use both so in the event of the car running hot, they cool it quicker.

I have minimal loom cut off from the black box. I have no idea where I would join this in to my loom.

Im currently fitting twin fans to mine at the moment (due to aircon) and from the top of my head that loom box doesnt look like it is complete. I could take some pics/describe the wiring when I get a moment if you like?

But like others said, If I didnt need the twin fans for aircon, I wouldnt be bothering :)

Dan! There was no need to chop it out its just plug and play into the standard system, its what I'm running(albeit with slim lines now). Although I can't get my low speed working <_<

There are 5 or 6 different switches with different temperature settings, some two speed and some just basic on/off.

I think I may have the wrong switch then!

The fan wiring is more or less self-contained. It plugs into the fans, the temperature switch, the shunt box for power, and the earth block near the headlamp. The only connection to the rest of the car is the loose red connector tucked away behind the passenger headlamp - normally unused on the GTI - which connects to the red socket in your photo.

It looks like yours has been cut though. I can't see the earth plug, or the power connection, just two fan and the temperature switch.

Does anyone know what the spare red connector does? I think that is the feed to turn the fans on when the aircon is switched on, but I cant find anything conclusive?

I was in a rush and it appeared to be hard wired and I wasn't 100% that was even correct so chopped it off there next to the shunt box. I remember seeing an earth now. Face palm.

Mine has two wires connected: A red one that supplies 12V for the temperature switch, and a yellow one which goes to the centre of one of the relay sockets, but isn't actually connected to anything as it only has a 4-pin relay in it.

I think the aircon must be connected elsewhere, or have a different fan loom with extra connections.
