eliteracer 2 Posted February 28, 2012 are 1.9 front disc/calipers bigger than 1.6? just wondered if its a quick cheap upgrade.
welshpug 1,646 Posted February 28, 2012 no, they are the same diameter but different offset due to the hubs.
Anthony 1,002 Posted February 28, 2012 As said, the same size disks at 247mm but the offset differs. The caliper design is different, with 1.6 having Bendix and 1.9 having Girling, and that's where the "upgrade" comes from - strictly speaking it isn't really an upgrade if the 1.6 brakes are functioning as they should and as they did when new, but the reality is that most of them are tired and under performing these days whereas the 1.9 Girling setup seems to age much better and thus tends to give a noticeable improvement when fitted to 1.6's. You use 1.9 calipers, pads, and mounting bolts, and 1.6 disks (to match the 1.6 hubs) on that setup.
gsidave 3 Posted February 28, 2012 So is it the drive flange that's the different offset or the whole hub ?
Anthony 1,002 Posted February 28, 2012 So is it the drive flange that's the different offset or the whole hub ? It is the drive flange / wheel hub (or whatever you want to call it) that differs between a base model hub assembly and a 1.6 GTi one and which gives the additional offset. You can confirm this on Servicebox - the hub carrier part has the same part number, but the drive flange / wheel hub is different. (obviously 1.9 GTi is completely different with the larger bearings and driveshaft spline fitment)
