Help! Possibly Gearbox Problem?

Recommended Posts

Guest Stainpain

I have recently bought a 205 gti 1.6.

As I'm driving on the motorway around 70mph at steady revs (about 3.300 revs) sometimes this problems happens. Suddenly it's as if the Gearbox pops out of gear and when I press the accelerator it's as if the car is in neutral and just revs... Everything feels fine, I.e I can use my gear lever and change to any gear I want (yet the engine will stay in neutral) then if I just leave it in 5th, eventually I hear a little clunk, and it's back in gear by itself... My right right driveshaft is a bit noisy so I'm going to change that, but surely that's not the problem is it?

Any help is much appreciated :)

By the sounds of it your gearstick is staying in the fifth gear position (not physically coming out of gear)?

If thats the case, it sounds like your clutch is slipping.

No the gear stick is free, it feels fine and I can move it to any position, but the engine stays in neutral :/ btw it has a new clutch..

I would still say clutch is slipping. If its had a new clutch, it could just be the clutch cable that needs adjusting properly.

I don't think the gearbox or driveshafts can cause the problem your describing.

I'd check that the hockey stick bolts on the driveshaft intermediate bearing are properly tightened and the driveshaft is not "floating" and dis-engaging from the diff! if so you prob. have no oil left either......

I'm getting a new driveshaft so I'll check that aswell, thanks :)

I'm still not convinced that the clutch is slipping as you an usually feel that, in this case it looses ALL drive, and when it suddenly starts working again it goes with a clunk..thanks anyway guys!

When it feels like it pops out of gear does the speedo still go up when you accelerate?

Does sound like the long shaft is popping out of the housing.

I'm not sure about the speedo as it doesn't work (needs new cable?) lol :(

Surely a driveshaft popping out would make a horrible noise?

not necessarily, when i changed the CTi engine the long driveshaft popper out going up a steep hill - just lost drive...the "hockey sticks" had bent (prob overtightened) and allowed the shaft to slip out.

Ah, fair enough.

Sounds like that could be the problem.

It's not a 1.6 box, at 70 you'll be doing allot more than 3300 rpm

i agree with that! mine is a completely standard 1.6 and at 70 mph i have between 3900 - 4000 rpm depending on going uphill or on a flat road!

I think it is the driveshaft as I gt the same problem again last night, whilst in 'neutral' there was a bend coming up, when I turned my steering wheel it sounded like the suspected driveshaft was going to rattle to pieces and was clonking like mad!! Got a new one on order now :) thanks for your help everyone!

Oh and btw te gearbox, it was just an estimate as my speedo doesn't work haha, clocked it this morning with my digital speedo app and I was doing about 3800...terrible on fuel ;)

Try the driveshaft for security before spending out on a new shaft......

What do you mean by checking for security? Also what are these hockey stick bolts etc :P

Sorry, not had much experience working on cars yet lol..

I had the same but when turning right it was my drive shaft coming out of the gearbox so I replaced the driveshaft and seal all sorted
