Head Cracked?

Recommended Posts

Sinbad

Took my head to be skimmed on tuesday, just cleaning all my valves today and the cylinder chambers and notised 3 of the chambers have what look like cracks? the engine the head is off had a failed HG.Spent all day cleaning everything today aswell, plus the cost of the bloody skim.

Heres the best pic of a bad bunch, its from the spark plug thread to the valve area and from seat to seat if you can see?

Scrap??

Quite commom for heads to crack their. Would of been picked up (or should of been) if it was pressure tested. Best not to fit that TBH as chances are it will lose compression / get worse.

Common between the plug hole & valve, can't quite see that. But sure it's not just a casting mark? The one between the valves looks as though it may be. A pressure test would be worthwhile and prove it either way.

but if you but it back together and it fails its going to cost you more than 60 plus all the inconvenice of having her of the road and doing it again.

I had an RGY head with the same problem. The engine (260.000km+) had good compression figures and did not pressurized the cooling system or used coolant. I also scrapped the head, but if I came across the same situation I would reuse the head. I don't think the cracks in my engine formed in its last 1000km, so for me it would ben worth the gamble.
