306 Wiper Motor Swap

Recommended Posts

welshpug

Had a spare 306 Wiper motor assembly, and a rather slow 205 wiper mechanism.

Take one 306 wiper assembly, pop the single linkage from the arm on the motor, buzz the 13mm nut securing the arm form the motor spindle, taking care not to move the motor, remove the arm.

undo the 3 10mm bolts.

on the 205 motor, remove both linkage arms, mark the position of the arm, undo the 10mm nut on the motor spindle + pop the arm off.

you'll notice the 205 arm has two balls on it, but the spindle hole is quite a bit smaller.

grind the back of the ball down flush, then punch it through on both arms.

the 306 arm is a little thicker, so you need to countersink the hole a little, then blast it up with the welder and grind down any excess.

ft 306 motor to 205 bracket, fit your modified arm lining up with mark you made earlier, re-fit linkage arms.

take the chance to grease up the spindles, pop the C-clip from the top end and lift the plastic body up, clean any excessive corrosion from the spindles and grease them up, re-assemble.

Cut the 306 plug off and fit the 205 wiring plug, wire colours and pin arrangement match, ideally I would have taken the female sealed plug from the 306 donor, though these connectors don't seem to give any issues.

I did this with a 106 motor on the rallye, thats just a straight swap though, great improvement.

How does this compare?

Just put an oe saxo one in mine, again a straight swap part no.640585, much improved. Seems like they are all more or less the same.

Is the 106 motor spindle smaller diameter than the 306? i.e same as the 205?

just used this one as I had it to hand and didnt cost me a penny :)

One really important point that I feel I must add - don't get the actual wiper arm spindles mixed up if you remove them to clean them up. The metal bar is a slightly different length on each (they actually have it embossed in to the metal, but it's usually hidden by corrosion). If you get them the wrong way round you'll find that the drivers side wiper travels off the edge of the screen.

Another thing i feel i must add is thanks very much to Welshpug (albeit in other topics aside from this one) for making it clear to line up the linkage at the 3 o'clock position when you put it back together if you weren't bright enough to mark it up when you took it off (like me ).

EDIT- it was in fact a post by Chris Mi not Welshpug that saved me from my stupidity, as per this topic;
