Will A 1.6 Box Increase Bhp On Mi16 On 45S ?

Recommended Posts

i have a 205 with mi16 on webbers and was wondering if anyone could tell me if a 1.6 gearbox would improve bhp ?

Im not sure if im going to make an idiot of myself answering this question but...

A gearbox will not increase bhp in anyway, the advantage of the 1.6 gearbox is the close gear ratios.

Feel free to shoot me down but this is just something I'm wondering-

Hypothetically, If the OP was running an engine with a GTI6 gearbox and then swapped it for a 1.6 5 speed jobby, would there not be less frictional loss using a 5 speed than a 6 speed thus causing a very slight raise in wheel BHP?

Fold your rear seats down once you've got that gearbox in place. ;)

Hasn't increased bhp, just decreased transmission loss - unless we want to be pedantic :P

It hasn't increased the engine BHP but it has increased the wheel BHP due to decreased transmission loss.

6 speed box isn't that bad, just the wrong ratio for a 205 IMO and you loose cornering ability...

Why are you lot talking about a 6 speed gearbox? Have I missed something?

You are going off topic :D

I guess we do...... :D

BHP or brake horse power is the power of an engine before gearbox and other drag is introduced :)

Simple answer is yes, probably about 20bhp, maybe 25 if you run on super unleaded.

Don't listen to these guys, they dont know what their on about.

Look up bhp on Wikipedia, there is a section on gear ratios, thats why bikes are so fast, very small gearboxes.

Brake horsepower

Brake horsepower (bhp) is the measure of an engine's horsepower before the loss in power caused by the gearbox, alternator, differential, water pump, and other auxiliary components such as power steering pump, muffled exhaust system, etc.

Cheers for confirming my post ;):P

You'll get better gains from giving it a good clay & polish so it cuts through the air with less frictional resistance.

And remember red ones are faster. It's a proven fact.

A highly polished red 205 with the back seats down will beat a Veyron off the lights every time.

from this end of the planet, tinted glasses and Typer-R stickers works even better. :P

iirc, the difference between 1.6 and 1.9 boxes are only the 1st and final drive. so i am running a 1.9 box with 1.6 final drive to give a stronger pulling but not too short 1st gear.

There's a lot of cr*p in this thread and this doesn't help the poor guy either.

The lower ratios of the 1.6 'box will increase the torque at the wheels. Torque is multiplied by gear ratios. Power isn't. The car will thus accelerate faster but the top end speed will not change. Horsepower is the stuff that pushes you through the air.

Motive force is a better description in this situation I guess. Torque moment at the wheels multiplied by effective moment length (wheel and tyre radius).

That is open to debate Peter. Badly chosen gear ratios on a very powerful engine will make it slower accelerating. But a serious subject discussion on that has no place in a thread like this

well done everybody for scaring off newbies again, and people wonder why we dont get many fresh faces on here that stick around and contribute to the forum. Do people not remember their first few simple questions they asked?
