Crank Regrind

Recommended Posts

i took my engine out today to have the crank reground and to replace the water pump, should i have the main bearing reground aswell as the big ends at the same time i think it would make sense even though the mains werent rumbling. and is there anything else i should look out for?

Let the machine shop measure the mains and big ends for you. What is the reason for doing the work, has it spun a shell? If so the rods all need checking for size. Also the oil pump at the bare minimum needs to come apart for a look.

the reason for doing the job is that the big ends were rattling, two years ago i went for the cheap fix and just changed the big end shells and it quietened it down a lot but not completely so now im gonna do it properly. i could have lived with it but now ive started using it more regularly the bloody water pump has started leaking so that has forced me into it.

that sounds about right, they would have been the big ends not little ends btw, that's the piston end of the rod.

well guys its all gone tits up i took engine down to mates garage and after an hour or so whacking and prising it still hadnt come out so then took it round to machine shop and the first thing he said without even looking at it was have you took the two bolts out. so we took the two bolts out and the cap virtually fell off then.with a bit more inspection to see if we had damaged the alloy block it turns out we broke two of the liners with the big pry bar i think.welshpug did mention the two bolts but i couldnt see where they were and now i need another engine ,ill look on the for sale section now ive got my 30 posts up.thanks for all your info and the moral of this story is i should have listened to you guys in the first place.
