205 Has Had A Bit Of A Knock

Recommended Posts

first post. i have been looking over this forum for the last couple of years, and i had been set on getting a 205 for some time. so i passed my driving test and purched my first car a 205 gti 1.6 in miami blue about a year ago. unfortunatley about 6 months ago my dad was driving it when some careless person swerved across the road when trying to make a right hand turn at a junction and hit him head on....

other bloke was driving a new honda, didnt have a scratch on him. my dad got six broken ribs and a broken sternum plus cuts and bruises and a week in telford hospital. i thought i would buy it back from the insurence (£150) and see what was left. i thought some of the the interior might be salvageable, but the nicee man at the yard where it was being kept chucked the battery on to the back seats, where it leaked all over the carpet and seats. i should have taken more pics of it, all the way down the passanger side there were some massive dents and creases from the force of impact and also on the roof. bits like rear beam, alloys, bits of trim and other odds and ends have been removed. the seats were bent and i thinkit he put his knee through part of the dash. so im not sure it was the right idea in the end, but thats not too important. untill i saw it i didnt realise just how little to these cars there is. safety is not a word i would use to describe them, but it is a 20 year old car!

soooo. after all that business i had a good look around had a look a few cars, but i still wanted another one. with a bit of luck (which i was due) i stumbled upon another 205 1.6 and in miami blue.

one lady owner from new, 56,000 miles, every bit of paper work the sale brochure, bill of sale, the clarion radio stickers still in their packet. i hope this one gives me a few more months than the last!

thanks.

no, i dont think he will be driving it too much. but even after the accident having him as a named driver brings the cost of my insurance down a bit.

i dont have too many pics of the smashed up one, like i said i sould have taken a few more but i just wanted to get rid of it, didnt like seeing it on the drive every day.

Certainly makes you think. Glad your dads alright dude, shame about the car! Although the replacement looks lovely, not many with such low miles and low keepers, looks mint. Non sunny too.

i couldnt believe that i have managed to get one thats in such good condition. as soon as i saw it advertised i gave them a phone and had put a deposit down within 2 hours of them putting it up for sale. when i went back with the rest of the cash a 4 days later they said they had had over 40 calls from other people trying to get it. it was the same price as my first one, which had 120,000 on the clock, not the best interior, 10 previous owners and could have done with a respray.

like i said, i think i was due some luck!

What are your plans for it?

dont have any really, use it and enjoy it. the plastics need a bit of touching up which i will do this week. and the rest is just maintaining it.

This always worries me with 205's. Nice to see you have a new one though. I think I can see Shane Gwilts concours Goodwood in the background of one pic!

will before you get rid of the wrecked car take off all the usable spares and put them in your garage or in the for sale section here!

as gti's are getting rarer someone will always want spares especially on here! i personally need the rear tailgate spoiler! your car was a phase 2 wasnt it? ( the phase 1.5 and 2 have a 5 screw fixed rear spoiler as opposed the the phase 1 being glued on )

i too am glad your dad is ok and if he lowers your insurance as a named driver its a bonus :)

Might even be worth squirreling away parts of the chassis that tend to rott out as repair / replacement pannels - under the rear seat as an example or boot floor. I know the majority of the car is usable but there is a lot from the back end that could be saved to help another 205 live :D

(obviously if you have room to store / can be arsed ^_^ )
