What's Your Best Fuel Consumption?

Recommended Posts

I managed to do 37mpg (7.7lt/100km) on the motorway doing between 60-75mph with a small part of town driving.

Most of the time AFR was 14.7 or so (one of the advantages of having an Emerald and a wideband emulating narrowband to work in closed loop mode) but I think I could do better if I spend more time on it.

At very light/part throttle it is difficult to run exactly stoichiometric (it was around 14.2 or so), not sure why, I have noticed similar in my Subaru at light throttle movements it is around 14.3 or so.

I remember Anthony saying he did similarly when the car was on Jetronic(?) so I must try harder!

P.S. That was without a front valence, hence worse aerodynamics (although some would argue the weight saving) :P

Current best ever tank was a touch over 39mpg, getting over 400 miles ot a tank - none too shabby for a Jetronic 1.9 GTi :)

That was driving "normally" and I'm sure I could eek out more if I tried, but that's not what these cars are about and I would get bored to tears trying to drive it in that manner - if economy is a concern, I take the 306.

Good result never the less, as it's much easier to get good economy in the summer than it is in winter in my experience - my 306 for example consistantly takes a 5-10% hit during the winter months.

I did indeed get 37mpg out of that same setup when it was still running on Jetronic - I didn't do enough miles when it was on Emerald to get a decent comparison, although it seemed fairly frugal when I had it over Christmas.

39mpg?!

That's astonishing if driving normally.

Yes as you say, in winter time and with winter tyres (which is what I am using atm) I notice around 3mpg drop in my Subaru so it *should* in theory be possible to do 39mpg but not without trying.

I agree it's boring but I like the challenge to see what it can do sometimes (very rarely!)

I managed to crack the 400 mile mark in mine on Motronic so similar to Antony's 39 mpg, but on my usual commute i'm getting around 320 miles before I fill up, around 32 mpg which I hope to improve by fitting a lambda sensor to sort out the fuelling properly.

I find longer distance A-road drives give respectable mpg without driving slowly, it's all about using the gears and no brakes, part throttle and avoid high+low rpm, no coasting out of geear etc.

That tend to be 50-60 mph rather than Motorway/Autobahn speeds so rpm is well under 4k most of the time.

I was always happy enough getting 30 mpg. If i'm driving long trips (300 mile or more round trips) i'd pinch my brothers 106 that got an unbelievable 500 ish miles per tank, sitting at 70 all day.

If I had to think about mpg seriously for job / financial reasons, the 205 would not be in the equation....

Well, i managed to get a tank at 42mpg when i had the xsara vts (driving like a granny with only a few select overtakes) aveage was more like 37 though, my 306 mi16 probably struggles to get more than 35mpg and my current 205 1.9 8v is around that same mark although i havent had it long enough to see if thats consistent or if i can do better if i stop driving it a go cart everywhere (forgotten how much fun 205's were). I think the thing that made me more economical in the xsara was the mpg readout on the dash showing current consumption, always saw it as a competition to do better.

45 easily in the GT, not being particularly stingy with the right foot! Could easily hit 47 or more I reckon if I really tried :P

Are they both Phase 2 Xsara VTS's with the later management out of interest?

(I'm assuming that Sam's is by the mention of the trip computer)

I've never found 306 GTi-6's or P1 Xsara's to be especially good on fuel, so interesting that P2 Xsara's look to be much better.

It's been a while since I checked, but I never normally dip below 30mpg no matter how I drive. :)

Brimmed it to go and pick up my roll cage at the weekend, currently on 280 miles at half a tank so I reckon this one could be a goodie. :D

Is that the Mondeo Cameron or the 205?

Still compared with the FSTi, the 205 uses half as much petrol in town.

37mpg

Hours and hours steadily at 140kmh going to down to the Alps.

In fact most cross continental trips seem to return good mpg.

Who's going to start worse mpg thread...I think Miles used to get 8mpg in his race car.

205, I haven't driven the Mondeo in months!

Need to sort out the insurance on it, for some reason the MID says it has 4 open claims despite me having a 6 year NCD.
