Bent Axel

am looking to buy a 205 that has a bent axel,the add says drivable will need trailered away..ive changed axels on mk2 astra gtes and mk3 gsis with no problems so reckon the swap over should be no problem?shoudl i been worried about and chassis being damaged?any advice would be appreciated,cheers

If the axle's bent surely it would mean the chassis would have taken some sort of damage aswel.

Never heard of a bent axle before either lol

205's don't have 'Axles' per-se. The rear suspension beam can be changed fairly easily, remove the back box, spare wheel, brakes and un-bolt the beam from the car.

 

The worry is that the car's mounting holes haven't taken the brunt of any damage.

Not necessarily. It is more likely to have bent the stub axle and trailing arm before the beam tube, but it's not impossible, iirc cRaig on here bent his beam tube in an accident for example.

i would check the rear beam mounts before handing over the cash to see if they are damaged. if they are you can either walk away or negotiate the price down depending on your opinion? good luck and keep us posted :)

It is entirely possible to bend a rear beam quite dramatically :P

Bent the stub axle, and the beam tube. Fortunately the mounting points survived undamaged, they do seem pretty tough! Shame the same cant be said for the bodywork :P

It does depend on exactly what is "bent" as to how much of a concern it is.

 

Most original 205 GTi beams are now knackered if they've never been refurbished, and one way that they typically fail is the bearings collapsing which leads to one or both wheels showing excessive negative camber - the top of the wheel leaning inwards, rubbing on the inner arch if bad enough. In this instance, it isn't "bent" as such, just worn out and knackered.

 

Hitting curbs are similar sideways as a result of a spin or somewhat over-zealous lift-off oversteer tends to bent the stub axle, usually leading to positive camber and a binding brake. If hit hard enough, it can break the brake disk, or bend/sheer the complete trailing arm.

 

Normally most damage is confined to the beam if that's all that took a hit, but obviously if it looks like it's taken a sizeable hit then check for any signs of movement or creasing on the shell very carefully. If you're in any way unsure, walk away - there's plenty of cars out there still
