Do cars have to have a working reverse gear to pass an mot?

Also what are the rules regarding solid axle's like welding diff's up?

Re. Reverse gear, would say not as there were those Messerschmit bubble cars the didnt't have a reverse gear.

Diff welding - don't know really - why do you want to weld it?

I'd guess that if a car had a reverse gear as an original feature then for m.o.t purposes it should work?I take the point with those bubble cars but they had no reverse gear as standard and would they not have been considered as a motorcycle/trike??Are m.o.t rules for these different?

But there's that stange foible: if it's got it has to work - but if it doesn't have it, no problem. E.g. when you swap passenger rear light cluster on a Nova to delete the reverse light (euro cluster) - no problem on the MOT. But if you still have it and the bulb has blown = fail

Agreed - the bubble cars might be classed differently as a trike / bike.

Surely you'd just piss the tester off expecting him to have to try and push it off the ramps and out of the brake test rollers??

It wont fail for 'not having reverse' but i think they can be failed if the tester is unable to get the car on and off the ramp (and though the brake rollers).

So you will need to either find a generous tester or a drive though test station.

If its got a welded diff they would have to do the brake test on the road anyway, also reverse lights don't come into the mot.

I guess you could do worse than contacting your local mot test station for advice?

Im thinking of a bike engine conversion in a 205 and am not going to bother with a reverse gear, but am unsure of that means it'l fail an mot because the 205 had one originally?!

That is an urban myth. I don't know why people ask about the MOT and/or guess about the test when you can just download the manual that the tester will use when actually doing an MOT.

Won't the roller destroy a welded diff?

doubtful, It'd more likely throw the car out of the rollers.

If anyone has a modded diff or welded up one, just inform the tester. They will have to do a tapley test.

welded diff is ok for the strip (straight line) but would cause bad under steer and makes it really awkward into bends.
