306 Xsi Pistons Into 1.9 205

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

My first post. To cut to the chase I have a 1.9 motor that I want to overhaul, tune and fit to my 1600 car which will be used as a weekend toy while remaining visually stock.

I noticed the mk1 306 xsi is an 8 valve Xu and after some research realised the pistons were bigger. If my sums are right that would make a 2.1 when fitted to the 1.9 crank.

Has anyone done this/able to advise how? Would I be wasting my time? Is the xu10 8 valve an alloy block, does it have liners?

Thanks

I use this engine in my track 205 although in 2.0 standard form, I would be interested to hear if your suggestion would work.

the iron block XU10J2 pistons are 86mm, the XU5 and XU9 are 83mm bore.

you need special liners to go 85mm, that would give you 1991 cc, I doubt you will be able to go to 86mm./

also due to the taller iron block the XU10 conrods are too long.

Cant help but think a 1991cc alloy block 8v would be lovely :D

Thanks all for your replies.

I'll have a look around the forum and see if I can find reference to 85mm pistons and liners. Is this modification generally considered worth the effort? Alternatively would the xu10 bottom end make a better starting point if I'm after a bit more torque while trying to keep the character of the 1600?

I'd like this to be as low cost as possible, hence me hoping I could bolt various pieces together.

If you start with the xu10 bottom end then Id advise putting the 88mm xu9 crank in to up capacity to 2045cc. Youll need to skim 1mm off the top of the pistons to avoid valve/piston contact, but the good part about that is it ups the CR slightly, and consequently the torque increases a touch.

Out of curiosity, will the xu9/5ja head drop straight onto the xu10j2 bottom end with the Xu10 head gasket and cam belt?

I can;t see any reason why it wont, 28craig ran the opposite combination in his 205 for a while.

Can you just straight swop the 1.6 engine for a 1.9 and use 1.6 management ?

Yes, as long as you use all the 1.6 management, such as injectors etc. You'll only have issues if you mix and match 1.6 and 1.9 parts.
