Help To Decipher Peugeot Dealer Diagnosis On My 1.9 Gti

Recommended Posts

scottbarton

Took my car into my local dealer today to get their opinion on an issue I have on my car when cold.

On initial start up it is fine, automatic choke works and revs maintained at around 1100-1200. After 5 minutes or so, the higher revs drop off and if I depress the clutch the car will stall. Once car is warmed up there is no problem, just a hint of 'hunting'.

The main dealer I took it to today diagnosed the following. And I quote:

"carried out checks, requires a new a and r unit on back of distributor as no vacuum, requires breather system cleaning out, requires throttle body cleaning and idle screw, requires spark plug check. After work done, requires idle set up on throttle body and air flow meter"

The cost for this little lot is quoted at £642 inc vat....but the technician did say to me that the parti require is only a small bit of the 'a and r' unit and can probably source off of eBay or a breaker.

My question is what the hell is an 'a and r' unit....what does it look like, and what part do I need.

Will be eternally grateful of any help in solving my annoying little problem!

Thanks

Scott

I would take that to mean the vacuum advance unit (sometimes called advance/retard unit) is faulty - it's the disk shaped thing attached to the dizzy.

You need to make sure that you get the correct one for your particular distributor, as whilst they all look similar, they don't interchange.

pug cant get the vacum advance & retard unit on its own any longer so they have probably quoted for an entire distibutor - thats why the price is so ridiculously high.

anyway, ive just replaced mine and its Bosch part number 1237 123 091, I got one through a local motorfactors £42 + vat.

this was for a 1.9 gti with distributor number 0237009066, so you best take off your distributor and check the number on it to make sure it will fit.

also, i would think the work they have quoted might take 2 to 2 1/2 hours tops to carry out, so they are having a laugh with £642 - if you are not comfortable doing the work yourself than i would find your nearest pug specilaist and get them to do it and steer clear of the dealer.

Excellent info! Thanks! Don't worry, I had no intention to do the dealer route. Just wanted their opinion on the symptoms I was experiencing. And to be fair, they did say that I only needed this small part but as they can't get it anymore, had to quote for the whole unit.

I will check tomorrow what type I have but the part you got from your motor factors sounds like the but I need.

Also found this thread, so at least I know what the bit looks like now! Ha ha!

I'm impressed that a dealer took the job on and came up with those problems, most know unless you plug a computer in it and replace something they don;t have a clue

New set of oil breather pipes, New AFM or recon one I'd add on the list as this deals with the idle and stalling allot

Shame your not closer as I have a very old Snap On Diag tool for these

My thoughts precisely.

requires throttle body cleaning and idle screw

That is what you expect from a 205 specialist, not a dealer!

This thread is a bit misleading really, taking a 205 to a dealer is not a good idea but it sounds like the OP found one with someone that is either into 205s or has worked there a long time, either way it is the exception that proves the rule.

Just a quick update on this one peeps...

My local SC Motor factors ordered the Bosch unit for me, and with a bit of carriage and VAT it came in just under £50. Peugeot then revised thier quote to £250 fitment along with throttle body clean, breather system clean and idle set up.

So, i took the bit home and armed with my trusty Haynes manual, decided to fit the bit myself. Was surprised at how easy it was...once i took the distributor off!

Car is much much more responsive now, the rough idle when cold is till there though so have booked her in on Monday at my local Peugeot for the idle set up.

The guy i spoke too there said to me that there was some 'old school' mechanics there that were looking forward to working on her, and said to me "they would be crawling all over it as they dont see many come in any more". So i can safely assume here that they do have some mechanics that know what they are doing when it comes to 205 GTi's!

For info, the dealer is 'Robins & Day' at Maidstone....they have been exceptionally helpful thus far.

Maidstone Robins and Day are my local main dealers too - Some of the parts guys are decent (There is a rather portly 'heavy breathing' chap who's friendly) some are not, bit of a lottery - Still not managed to wangle a discount though!

Good to hear they are looking forward to seeing it - I saw a couple of 205s up on the ramps as I've driven passed in the last few weeks, not GTi's though.
