What Are The Gains Of A Gti6 Manifold On An Xu9J4

Recommended Posts

GilesW

Despite searching I'm still unsure on exactly what the advantages are on using a GTi6 inlet manifold/TB/etc is on an XU9J4 engine (1.9 Mi), over the standard manifold.

I've seen plenty of speculation, but not really manay stated facts.

So people can you tell me:

What are the pro's and con's of this mod?

and

What is the list of parts needed to get this wokring on the Mi16?

Cheers....

Sweetbadger recently wrote a guide to changing over to the GTi-6 inlet which tells you exactly what is required.

Quick search found it - clicky :)

Not seen that whilst I've been searching.

At least not a conclusive list.

Any pointers to it gratefully accepted......

still havent seen proper hard facts on the benefits performance wise, same as fitting one to the 2.0 mi16.

physical benefits are only that the 1.9 mi16 throttle bodies tend to wear where the Solex single butterfly on the gti6 seems to be harder wearing.

they do sound bloody brilliant though :D

thats the ony way to do it, other than aftermarket management retaining the original gti6 tps and not use an Idle valve.

Well!

You have a better tps and less likely to be worn butterflies.

More clearance between rad and inlet also...... I teased another 10bhp out of mine but I did add a wasted spark set uo with emerald ECU also.

If you're interested the inlet will probably be for sale soon.

I forgot to mention that with the emerald it meant I could junk the afm also, which is another thing that was wearing out.

Can you run the '6 TPS on Mi management though? I know in your case it doesn't apply, but would be handy to know, and less work of course!

No. GTi-6 TPS is a proper potentiometer, whereas a Mi16 uses a throttle switch the same as an 8v.

The Mi16 ECU needs to see the throttle closed for the ICV to work properly, and fully open click for full throttle fuelling/ignition map.

GTi-6 TPS is fine for using with Emerald or similar though, whereas of course an 8v/Mi16 one isn't.

Hum. All very interesting.

Not sure if the GTi6 TB route will really offer me any gains then.

I have Wurzels old car (and a good one it is it).

He put an Audi 100 TB on it sand I've checked - no issue with worn butterfly.

http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?showtopic=43674

As said the MI TPS woudl bneed to be retained (indeed it's been grafted onto the audi TB).

Wurzel built the car well - so the radiator nicely misses the inlet.

Not looking at management at the moment as will evenytually go the full mutli throttle TB route (a future phase) so it' sounds like I'm unlikely to see any real world gain over my current set up.

Does that sound about right to people - or have I missed something?

Actually - the 6 inlet - doesn't it have a resonator box and caster flared trumpets?

If so any gains from those?

....ah... doesn't the resonator box need to have the actuating valve working to use, or am I now mixing up my engines?????

The nicely cast trumpets have to be worth something over the blunt ends of the Mi16 tubes. Think of it this way. A GTi6 makes 5hp than a D6C with just 93cc more and heaps less camshaft. Those bump sticks are tiny. Look what happens to a GTi6 when you add bigger cams? It makes 180-190hp so easily.

Got my name down for a stage 1 cam and already have one of your chips peter.

Sounds like the 6 inlet and TB complements this nicely then Peter?

I'm running the GTi6 manifold and TB on an Mi16 with standard management. Main reason I did it was to get the better TB as I'd gone through countless of worn Mi16 TBs and was getting fed up of dodgy idles. As soon as I fitted the 6 bits, never had an issue with the idle again. Don't think the AFM is perfect, so got a re-furbed one to try when it's back on the road.

Hardest bit is re-routing of pipework. I used a combo of 8v bits.

Oh, and you get some of that GTi6 induction noise too ;)

If you go Gti-6 inlet route, get the Emerald (or similar) as it softens the financial 'blow' when you go for tb's! ;)

If that isn't man maths at its finest, I don't know what is

That means possibly two looms and two lots of mapping though, not really thinking man maths!!:P
