Head Lamp Mot Fail.

Recommended Posts

miamigtimark

Car has failed on "headlamps have no pattern"

Not sure what this means and couldnt ask the tester as he'd finished work before i picked the car up.

Now the car passed MOT last year with the same lights and the only thing i can see wrong with them is that there is a lot of condensation on the glass. Could this be the problem????

Retest is on thursday so need to know if i need to order new lamps or meerly get the wifes hairdryer out!!!

TIA.

i would ask the tester direct face to face what the issue is but just check the usual like bulbs correct wattage , no rust in reflector , no condensation inside glass lens? or alternatively use another mot station to get their opinion.

quite likley that the reflectors have lost their silvering and dont give a good enough beam to produce any pattern.

Cleaned out all condensation/dirt.

Resealed units.

Cant think of anything else to check.

See what happens thursday!!

Bulb might have been loose or some damp, Are they OE lights or pattern one's? if the latter that could well be why and with new equipment they can test the pattern better

To be fair there was lots of condensation in both lenses.

Iirc they are both lucas items.

Just to hedge my bets would uprated bulbs help??

When it goes dark drive your car up to a wall, put the lights on and check the pattern yourself. As headlamps get old they do tend to loose there pattern.

Like gsidave said, shining your light against a wall should show if your headlights have a pattern. Uprated bulbs would not help with this issue.

9 times out of 10 when a car fails on this, an incorrectly fitted bulb is at fault. Id double check the bulb has been properly fitted.

Uprated bulbs unless a good brand can make it allot worse and if you don;t upgrade all the wiring it will end up melted

I had this once when I fitted some cheap ebay bulbs, swapped them for a known brand & that fixed it.
