It always works fine when doors are opened but the switch part only occasionly works.

Usually the contacts inside need a bit of a clean up / tweaking to fix :)

Are the interior lights fuse protected, as mine have only ever came on once.

Not seperately no, if it was a fuse you'd know because other items wouldn't work either.
