Advice On Some Rust Please

Recommended Posts

Telf

hi all,

I have a little bit of rust on my nearside rear 1/4 panel. I was wondering if anybody could advice me on the best way to tackle it. I dont have the facility to do sort it at home and I'm not really sure of the cost to get it fixed. This is the only real issue with the car apart from this its in good condition.

Just realised i cantopload images yet! The rust is along the bottom of the panel-- so above the sill in between the panel and the sill. also in the passenger door recess where the rear 1/4 panel is welded to

Any advice would be great

Depends how bad it is,if it's just surface rust you can clean it up best you can and treat it with Bilthamber products then a small skim of filler and prime and paint. If it's worse it'll prob need cutting out and replacing with new metal, filling then prime and paint.

Upload the pictures to something like Imageshack and then link them on here :)

avoid imageshack as they've recently changed their policy an you can only have 500 pics in TOTAL and if you go over it they start deleting them! go with www.photobucket.com

I use Flickr now, as it gives several size options as well as the full original file

Doesnt look bad, i had this problem on one side. I dug out the sealant between the seal and rear quarter and replaced it. I also put sealant on the inside on rear quarter to stop damp/water sitting on the inside.

i would take the rear interior panels out and check the condition of the inner side or the rear quarter to make sure the seam sealer hasn't failed and there is no water trapped inside to rust out from inside! but to be fair it doesnt look too bad and is certainly repairable. looks like you either caught it early or its a previous bad repair.

Ok,

So dig the sealant out on the outside? or inside behind the interior panel. Im happy to do that-can i get coloured sealant to replace it or would i have to respray? Soryy I'm ok with mechanical stuff but pretty ignorant of body work issues.

Thanks

All depends if you want to spray it yourself.

Dig the sealer out from outside with a screwdriver or similar being carefull not to slip and scratch the sill or quarter.A heatgun or hairdryer will make it easier and also dry any moisture that's got in,take the interior panel off for piece of mind if you want.
