When My Engine Is Out I Should...

Hi, im fairly new to this forum. i Have a 1991 205 gti that i bough a few months back, and to my luck its rotten. cutting a long story short i am going to reshell it. While i have the engine out what things are woth changing the ov being cambelt, water pump ect, but are there any hiden secrets that i can do to help these engines. Bearing in mind the engine was sent to skip brown engines around 40,000 miles putting out 143bhp 9 years ago :huh:

put a brass bush and new gear linkages in to tighen up the gearshift no end. obvs. cambelt and water pump, will be worth putting new hoses in as well maybe. The O-ring behind the distributor frequently breaks causing an oil leak down the back of the block, have a look at that too.

 

driveshaft seals are a good one to do as well, and while you're down there the speedo cable canbe replaced - to stop the jerky speedo syndrome. As well as the engine mounts. Also the exhaust manifold does crack between number 3 and 4 branches, can be welded up or swapped out. Hope that's enough to be getting on with!

 

 

Or, just man up and put in a XU10JRS. :ph34r:

Check the clutch for signs of deterioration/heavy wear and the crank end seals.
