Recommended Posts

UnderNutter

Hi lads and lasses, new round here :)

Yeah, I've just fitted a tacho to mine and wondered what it redlined at?

Thanks in advance

Dave

Why would you want to redline it in the first place  Would reckon peak power..., at a guess, would be around 5.5k and rev to 6K. will do it's best work pottering around the town centre though not A oe B road.

Whatever the valve springs will allow! No rev limiter on these early carb'd TU's (Apart from the 1.3 Rallye).

6000rpm would probably be a good figure to change gear at if you are in a hurry :)

Also take your tacho with a pinch of salt as they can be very out.

Max power is at 5,800 but whether a 20+ yr old engine can get there is another matter.

Info is here.

205 1.1 carb

Its out of a scrap mondeo. Heath-robinson I know, but I'm the (experi)mental sort.

It doesnt seem to want to rev past about 3- 3 an a half thousand once you wind it up to about 70. How can I go about getting an accurate rev-counter?

does anyone have an OEM one knocking around, to go in place of my clock as per the haynes manual exploded diagram?

cheers guys

Why do you need a rev counter?

These engines are so reliable, just use your ear.

My previous 1.0 Trio Plus and AX 1.0 were taking a lot of abuse and never had a problem with them, in fact the most reliable and cheap to run cars I ever had and they were a lot of fun once you kept the momentum going.

If it doesn't like to rev something isn't right though.

Does it struggle only in top gear?

Whilst I agree with you (I just don't bother taking the 306 past 3.5k), I think he's using it to find why it's struggling to accelerate as it should still pull albeit very slowly.

Cheers chaps

Reason why I wanted a revcounter is thus: I just prefer to drive with one rather than without. It primarily makes pulling away easier when the engines cold and/or I've got a car full of lairy mates and the tunes are going.

RE struggling in top gear, I wouldn't say theres a problem with the engine. from 60 or so, it will pick up, but slowly. I'd expect it to do that, its only a 1.1 carb after all.

I was just curious as to why it was only on about 3200 revs at 70, it probably tops out at around 85 after all. I was more thinking ablong the lines of weather or not my scrapyard tacho would be suitably calibrated.

70 mph (indicated) at approx 3100 RPM 3500 RPM at (indicated) 80 MPH in top (4th) gear on my 1.1 with 185/60/14 tyres. Runs out of puff in lower gears at 7000 RPM, two upper gears would never see those kind of revs !

On a slight downhil private road with a typhoon blowing in the right direction I have seen 90+ in a 1.0 4-geared 205/AX so your top speed sounds reasonable.

Haha reminds me of taking my old 1.0xe along the coast road from Bridport to Weymouth, use to end up in 1st gear doing 10mph on some of those hills ^_^

Still a cracking car though!
