How Easy To Change Speedometer Cable?

Recommended Posts

scottbarton

Hi all

I have been quoted £113 labour for changing my speedometer cable on my 1.9 Phase 2, that is causing my needle to jump about. Its also creating a clicking sound from the right hand side footwell, am assuming its the pickup or the cable has a kink.

Anyway, is it an easy enough job to complete? Am quite handy around a spanner and am willing to give it a go, but if its a complete ball ache of a job then i will get the dealer to do it, especially in this cold weather.

;-)

Thanks

you don't need any spanners to do the job, just a screwdriver and possibly a torx bit.

Haynes manual covers it, but basically involves dismantling the top half of the dash/instrument cluster.

7 Speedometer cable - renewal 2 spanner rating.

1 Disconnect the speedometer cable from

the transmission by removing the retaining

bolt or rubber plug.

2 Remove the instrument panel, as described

in Section 5.

3 Prise the rubber grommet from the

bulkhead beneath the facia (see

illustrations).

4 Remove the retaining clips, where fitted,

and withdraw the speedometer cable.

5 Refitting is a reversal of removal.

There is nothing difficult to do, but I will warn you that threading it through the dash structure is an awkward job, definitely use something tied to it before removal to pull through the new one.

Edit; it certainly isn't £113 of awkward though!

Excellent! Cheers chaps! Just ordered a new cable and some cogs that may be at fault...will have a crack at it. I have already taken the dash apart once to replace the lamps, so should be straight forward. Good tip about using the old cable as a draw wire. Cheers

That was a dealer price by the way. Will be careful taking it apart, I remember from last time I nearly cracked the part adjacent to the vents.....

Meirion changed the one in my car in about 4 minutes. In fairness, he didnt have to do much as I have minimal dash to work through! lol

Iirc I heard they break because the exhaust manifold below it heats the oil inside causing the oil to run down one end of the cable and no matter what foil or wrapping you put round it still heats up. I had a clicking and jumping speedo I noticed at the back of the speedo it had worked loose slightly but once I pushed it back in it was fine.
