when i accelerate from 1st or generally give it some stick i get loads of vibration coming through the steering wheel, any ideas what this might be?

Likely to be drive shaft related....CV joint.

tighten up as many bolts as you can. make sure your hub nuts are tight.

torque up as many bolts as you can. make sure your hub nuts are torqued.

It's worth checking the condition of your engine mounts.

my arms are torque wrenches! Get to that point where you hear the 'click', you know shes done then.

Is it just first gear this happens in or all the time?

 

Work methodically:

• Start with the tyres, check there's no damage / buldges etc
• Wheels - not buckled and that they're mounted to the hub properly and the bolts are correctly tightened. Lost any balanceing weights?
• Hubs - bearings ok?
• Wishbones - all bolts tight, bushes ok?
• Drive Shafts - any play in the CVs? Long shaft bearing ok?
• Tracking ok? Might indicate a problem with uneven tyre ware.

As others have mentioned, check your engine mounts - worn mounts might just emphasise a slight vibration from elsewhere?

 

Not all of these my be causing your issue, but best to remove them from suspicion
