Roll Cage Advice Needed

Recommended Posts

hanpug25

I've recently brought a 205 gti fitted with an aluminium Safety devices full rollcage. I've had a search on good old Google, and it seems it is genuine, althouh not FIA approved as they were banned from competition use some years back. Its very light and the tube diameter is the same as a T45 cage (although the tube thickness is alot thicker being 5-6mm thick) and it looks as though it will add strength to a car.

Has anyone evercome across one before?

Ad.

No issues, just wanted to confirm it was genuine (suppose I could have rang SD direct) and what opinions of the ally cages were...

MSA Outlawed Ally Cages as well. There is no place for them in motorsport unfortunately mate. I think you'll find its unlikely that its ally anyway, what makes you think it is?

Safety Devices. Its Aluminium - approx 5-6mm thick tube and brackets. Looks fine for trackdays and is suprisingly sturdy in situ and bolted up. Weighs less than half my OMP, but obviously has less strength. It came in a car I brought. I knew there was a half cage, but turned out to be a full one...all be it an outlawed one (MSA, FIA etc).

If designed/manufactured by SD, it must serve its purpose to some degree...outlawed or not.

Have you asked your self just why they are banned, use the old grey matter!

Is it because the cage is aluminium? and aluminium is softer and more maliable than steel? not to mention the work hardening properties compared to the other materials used in roll cage manufacture?..Thanks for pointing the facts that were eluding me -_-

I understand the reasons the material was banned, but was after info on whether the cage was legit and known of.

If you feel you need to post on forums purely to insult then, I suggest you try 306gti6.com ;)

No, it's cause it fatigues over time, so they never just how strong the cage will actually be!

Anyway, I know SD and a few other places used to offer ally cages just for track use - a bit of protection, stiffens the chassis and doesn't add too much in the way of weight.

Sounds perfect for a fast road or track day car, why anybody needs to fit a 10-point MSA certified cage to either of those is beyond me.

Sounds legit, SD produced an aluminium cage, you have an aluminium cage with SD badging on it, I reckon that's your question answered!

Are you looking to keep it or sell it?
